Alaska Aces News Release
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - Chris Beckford-Tseu stopped all 25 shots he faced and Peter Metcalf led the offensive attack with two goals and an assist as Alaska dominated Utah, 6-0, in front of 3,903 Friday at the 'E' Center.
After being shut out for the first 51 minutes Wednesday in a 2-1 loss, the Aces grabbed the lead with the first of their two power play goals at the 8:11 mark of the first period, a Stephen Wood wrist shot from the left circle that sailed past Grizzlies starter Rob McVicar. A broken play led to the second goal two minutes later, as a pass from Olivier Filion intended for Barrett Heisten instead found Peter Metcalf, who beat McVicar from between the circles for a 2-0 edge at the break. Filion and Heisten assisted on both first period goals.
Alaska survived penalty trouble early in the second period and one of its stalwarts on the kill, Vladimir Novak, beat McVicar with a wraparound at 16:47. Corbin Schmidt, getting his first start in four games, kept the puck in the offensive zone on two separate occasions during the possession and received credit for the assist along with Matt Robinson, making his first start after missing five games to be with his younger brother, Garrett, who continues to recover from a serious automobile accident.
Metcalf scored a power play goal off the rush with 54 seconds left in the period, and the Aces began the third with a commanding 4-0 lead. With McVicar having been removed in favor of Jon Volp, Schmidt fed Julian Talbot in the slot for a goal to extend the bulge to 5-0, and Robinson beat Volp five-hole with 24 seconds left for his first pro goal, one that completed the scoring. Beckford-Tseu ran his record to 3-0 with Alaska in recording his seventh career shutout, including three in last year's Kelly Cup playoffs.
The Aces, now 5-3 and trailing only Idaho (7-1-1) in the West Division, meet the Grizzlies in the rubber match of this three-game series tomorrow evening at 5:05 p.m. AST, with live coverage on KFQD 750 AM beginning at 4:45 p.m. Utah (3-5-2) has dropped into the division basement.
Alaska returns home to Sullivan Arena for a three-game series against the Las Vegas Wranglers next week. The opener is set for Thursday at 7:15 p.m. while the last two games will be played in the afternoon, Saturday at 2:05 p.m. and Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Tickets are now available at the Aces office, www.alaskaaces.com, and all Fred Meyer locations in Anchorage. Fans also may call Ticketmaster at 562-4800.
