Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, faced the Pacific Division leaders, the Fresno Falcons, in game one of a three-game series, and held their commanding two period lead for their third straight win. Goaltender Julien Ellis made 44 stops in the 6-3 victory.

The Salmon Kings struck first at 4:06 into the first period when Gustav Engman scored his first goal of the season. On the powerplay, Engman took a pass from Ryan Wade and fired a shot from the point. Fresno Netminder Ryan MacDonald got a piece of the shot with his glove but it bounced in for a Victoria 1-0 lead. The Salmon Kings added another score three and a half minutes later as Milan Gajic capitalized on a 3-on-1, taking the puck out of the Victoria zone and beating MacDonald glove side.

Victoria Captain Kiel McLeod scored his sixth of the season and gave the home team a 3-0 lead at 4:28 into the second stanza. Veteran Wes Goldie led McLeod over the blueline to the crease and McLeod went top shelf. Seamus Young padded the lead to 4-0 at 8:05 into the second, and earned his second goal of the season. Gajic carried the puck into Falcons territory, spun at the right circle and fed the streaking rookie defenseman for the one-timer chip in. Before the end of the second, McLeod tallied his second score of the night. Goldie found the 6-foot-6 Forward in the slot and McLeod made no mistake to give Victoria a 5-0 lead heading into the final period.

McDonald, who gave up five goals in 20 shots, was replaced by Scott Stirling between the pipes for the third period. Fresno found the net in the third as Defenseman Tyler Kindle snuck in a shot from the right of the net, and earned a shorthanded goal at 6:27. Just 29 seconds later, Victoria Forward Greg Hornby grabbed his first goal of the season as he charged the net and popped in a loose puck for the Salmon Kings 6-1 lead. The Falcons' Cory Murphy tapped in two goals before the end of the period, but Victoria held on for its third straight win.

Final score: 6-3 Victoria

Ellis snagged his second win of the season, and MacDonald was charged with his second loss. Victoria and Fresno matched with the man advantage, going 2 for 9 on the powerplay. The Falcons outshot the Salmon Kings 47-27. Victoria (4-4-1) and Fresno (6-2-0) faceoff for game two of the three-game series this Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
