Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (6-3-0) tallied a pair of third period goals and picked up 25 saves from goaltender David Shantz to knock off the Columbia Inferno (3-4-3) by a score of 2-1 on Friday night at Germain Arena in front of a crowd of 6,057.
After a scoreless first two periods that saw plenty of action on both sides of the ice, the Everblades broke through scoring their fastest goal to begin a period this year when David Brine collected his third goal of the year just 34 seconds into the final frame. Brad Zancanaro and Brent McDonald helped out with the assists. Dustin Johner tallied his first goal on the season at the eight minute mark when he ripped a shot over the glove of Columbia goaltender Robert Gherson and under the crossbar. Mike Angelidis had the lone assist after intercepting a clearing attempt by Gherson and feeding Johner.
The Inferno battled their way back into the game by converting on a 5-on-3 power play when Jeff Miles banked a shot off the leg of Shantz from the bottom of the left circle to cut the Florida lead in half. Owen Fussey and Luke Fulgham each assisted on the goal.
Shantz held off a hard charging Inferno over the final 5:30 to earn his fourth win of the season with the 25 save effort, 12 of which came in the third period, and Gherson saw his record drop to 1-2-1 allowing the two goals on 31 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades finished the night 0-for-4, while the Inferno converted on one of their ten attempts.
The win improved Florida's home record to 3-2-0 on the season and gave the Everblades the early lead in the nine-game season series with Columbia.
The Florida Everblades, proud affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers, return to the ice on Saturday, November 11 when they host the Columbia Inferno at 7:30 p.m. at Germain Arena. Saturday's game vs. Columbia will be televised locally on My TV-8.
