Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ (December 22, 2006) - The Trenton Titans were able to erase a three-goal deficit against the Dayton Bombers, but could not complete the comeback in a 5-4 shootout loss in front of 3,197 at the Sovereign Bank Arena.
Trailing 3-1 in the third period and being outshot 25-15, the Titans fell further behind when Yannick Tifu was dragged down on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot at 1:51. Tifu converted with a backhand into the top corner to push Dayton's lead to three goals.
Scott Bertoli made the score 4-2 at 7:23 as he took Mike Pandolfo's centering pass and slipped it inside the far post for his third of the season.
Pandolfo took it from there with two power play goals in the back half of the third period to knot the score at four with 2:54 remaining in regulation. Both times, the fifth-year vet was able to bang home the rebound from Bryan Miller's point shot while also raising his team-leading goal total to eighteen.
The two teams would head through the overtime and into the shootout where Philippe Dupuis put the Bombers up 1-0 in round three. Goaltender Adam Berkhoel was perfect for Dayton through four rounds, but Benoit Mondou tied it for the Titans in the top half of round five.
The Bombers were able to answer right back and skate away with the victory as Mike Berry deked and put a backhander past the leg pad of Gregg Naumenko.
Though Trenton took a 1-0 lead into the second frame on Mark Pandolo's fourth of the year, the Bombers lit the lamp three times in the middle period for a two-goal cushion going into the second intermission.
Naumenko stopped 33 shots over 65 minutes of hockey and 3-of-5 in the shootout as he goes to 5-2-2 on the year. The Titans finished 2-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
