
Tides Open Second Half of Season with Defeat to Bulls

DURHAM, N.C. - The Norfolk Tides (44-47) kicked off the second half of its season with a 6-3 loss to the Durham Bulls (49-42) on Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Tides jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in first, when Terrin Vavra doubled to lead off the game and scored on a double from Jordan Westburg. Westburg then scored on a two-out RBI-single from Yusniel Diaz and he scored two batters on an infield-single from Robert Neustrom.
Vavra has now reached safely in 21-straight games, which is the second-longest active streak in the International League and Westburg now has 29 RBI in 33 Norfolk games. Both recorded their team-leading 15th multi-hit games of the season tonight as well.
But the Bulls would chip away at the lead with a run in their half of the opening frame and would later tie the contest with a pair in the third. Durham would take the lead for good in the fourth and then would go on to score two more times in the ballgame.
DL Hall got the start for the Tides and worked only 1.0 inning in a scheduled short outing. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out two batters. Hall now has 101 strikeouts with Norfolk, which also ranks second in the International League.
Nick Vespi worked a perfect seventh inning and now has not allowed an earned run in his 19 appearances with the Tides this season.
The two teams return to action tomorrow night, with the Tides scheduled to start RHP Matt Harvey (1-0, 2.13) and the Bulls are slated to start RHP Easton McGee (4-5, 4.17). First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
POSTGAME NOTES
HALL MONITOR: DL Hall worked just 1.0 innings tonight, which was a scheduled short outing...he allowed one run on two hits and whiffed two batters...in his 60.0 innings pitched with the Tides this season, Hall has punched-out 101 batters...since his Triple-A debut on May 10, he is the first pitcher in the league to reach the 100 strikeout mark and he currently ranks second in the league in strikeouts, trailing only Gwinnett's Kyle Muller (117).
TIDES START FAST: The Tides scored three times in the opening frame of tonight's game and have now scored 65 runs in the first inning this season...that figures ranks third in the International League...for Tides in runs by inning, it's the second-highest run total after the fifth inning (70).
TERRIN UP THE BASEPATHS: Terrin Vavra lead off the game with a double and extended his on-base streak to 21 games...he extends his team-high streak and he also holds the second-longest streak in the International League...it is the longest streak by a Tides player since Tyler Nevin reached safely in 25 games in 2021...since this on-base streak began on June 19, Vavra is batting .338 (25-for-74) with eight doubles, two home runs and 12 RBI...by going 2-for-4 tonight, it was his team-leading 15th multi-hit game of the season.
LOW TIDES: The Tides only scored three runs in tonight's series opener...in their last eight games, they have scored more than three runs just one time and have only scored 54 runs in 16 games this month (3.4 R/G)...the Tides have also posted a .214 (107-for-500) average this month, which is the worst mark in the International League...they are the only club in the league that is batting under .220 in July.
