BUFFALO, NY - Returning to Sahlen Field for the first game after the All-Star break, the Buffalo Bisons opened up a quick three-game series against the Rochester Red Wings with a 3-0 win on Friday night.

Yusei Kikuchi made his first rehab start with the Herd after being placed on the injured list with a neck strain on July 7, and threw five shutout innings in the win. Kikuchi allowed just two hits, walked three, and struck out four on 77 pitches.

The Herd gave him a lead before he ever threw a pitch, scoring three in the first headlined by a towering two-run homer by Spencer Horwitz, before Stevie Berman later drove in LJ Talley after the latter reached on an error.

Red Wings starter Josh Rogers, who was also on a rehab assignment, matched Kikuchi's five innings, but gave up three runs (two earned) off six hits on the night.

Bowden Francis and Graham Spraker each had a perfect inning with a pair of K's before Trent Thornton came on in the eighth. Thornton loaded the bases off a walk and two singles with just one away, but got Ildemaro Vargas to promptly hit into a double play to get out of the jam.

Matt Gage then took the ball in the ninth and closed out the game with a 1-2-3 frame; the Bison pitching staff combined to allow just four singles all night for their sixth shutout win of the season.

The Bisons will look to win this mini-series tomorrow evening, with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m. EST.
