Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

PAPILLION, Neb. -Many heroes showed their power as the Omaha Storm Chasers (46-44) took down the Iowa Cubs (40-50) 9-1 in the series opener. The Storm Chasers hit four home runs in the game while wearing special Black Panther jerseys, part of Marvel's Defenders of the Diamond night. Iowa now leads the season series 4-9, as Omaha looks to cut into the deficit.

The I-Cubs scored the game's first run, putting a rally together in the first to open the 1-0 lead.

Omaha responded in the bottom of the frame, getting one-out walks from second baseman Michael Massey and right fielder Nate Eaton. Left fielder Brewer Hicklen emptied the bases with his 15th homer of the season to give Omaha the lead. Designated hitter Dairon Blanco hit his eighth dinger of the season, the second consecutive game that Omaha hit back-to-back homers and give Omaha the 4-1 lead.

In the second, center fielder Drew Waters started the inning with a single before Massey moved him to second with a single. A single from Hicklen plated another run before Blanco hit a sacrifice fly to extend the Storm Chasers lead to five.

Omaha's bats quieted in the next couple innings before coming alive again in the sixth. Waters drew another walk before Massey hit the Chasers third homer of the game to put Omaha ahead 8-1.

Waters opened the eighth with a homer, his first in Werner Park as a Storm Chaser. Omaha took game one by a 9-1 final.

The Chasers' bullpen came out strong, throwing eight combined innings to keep the I-Cubs off the scoreboard. Left-hander Marcelo Martinez (Win, 3-4) started the bullpen's action throwing 4.0 scoreless innings after Omaha's starter came out after the first.

Omaha continues its four-game series with Iowa on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. with coverage starting at 4:45 on the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show on 1180 The Zone. Tomorrow's probable starter for the Storm Chasers is right-hander Carlos Hernández (1-4) and the I-Cubs are set to send right-hander Caleb Kilian to the mound.

Tomorrow's game is Faith & Family Night with a post-game concert from Christian Music Artist Cory Asbury. It's also Bobby Witt Jr. Bobblehead Giveaway, so get to the ballpark early to get yours.
