Worcester Red Sox News Release
The Worcester Red Sox traveled down to Clem Spillane Field in Wareham, MA. for a game between the Cape Cod Baseball League's Wareham Gatemen and Hyannis Harbor Hawks on Friday, July 15. Representatives interacted with fans, participated in pre-game ceremonies, and helped to promote the WooSox to a new audience.
As a part of pre-game ceremonies, Chief Ambassador Rick Mederios and intern Liza Armstrong threw out Ceremonial First Pitches to Wareham infielder Jack Housinger (Xavier University) and outfielder Owen Diodati (University of Oregon.) However, the majority of the WooSox' time was spent interacting with Wareham's younger fans. Mederios, Armstrong, and co-captain of the WooSox ambassadors, Marianna Colantuono, played with youngsters and even gave them a chance to walk away with a Triston Casas, Rich Gedman, or former Wareham player Jarren Duran bobblehead, or a Smiley Ball baseball cap with a friendly Plinko game.
The WooSox crew also handed out memorabilia to attendees. Fans received WooSox stickers, pens, decals, pocket and magnet schedules, and school kits. One lucky fan even received a "swag kit:" filled with a WooSox jersey, Smiley Ball plushy, travel mug, and cap.
The WooSox also got the word out about the upcoming Cape Cod Classic at Polar Park game between Wareham and the Bourne Braves, and there appears to be nothing but excitement on the Gatemen's end.
"It's very exciting to play [at Polar Park]," said senior vice president of the Wareham Gatemen, Glen Hannington. "I've heard nothing but great compliments about that place."
"It's gonna be really cool," Diodati said. "Obviously playing in a pro stadium is something you dream of as a kid. This league is awesome, and it's really some of the best college competition around the country, so it'll be really cool to see how we stack up in a pro environment."
