Three Sea Dogs Headed to Eastern League All-Star Game

Portland, Maine- The Eastern League in conjunction with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats have announced the rosters for the 2008 Eastern League All-Star Game. Three Portland Sea Dogs have been selected to participate in the mid-summer classic; outfielders Bubba Bell and Jeff Corsaletti and pitcher Michael Bowden. The All-Star Game will be played on Wednesday, July 16th at Merchantsauto.com Stadium in Manchester, New Hampshire.

The All-Star Game will feature the Northern Division All-Stars against the Southern Division All-Stars. Each team will consist of 24 players. The All-Star teams were selected through fan balloting along with selections from media personnel, club field personnel, and Eastern League administrators. Each Eastern League team has at least three players, including at least one pitcher and one position player.

Outfielder Bubba Bell is hitting .300 with a team leading 12 home runs and 41 RBI in 66 games this season. The 25 year-old has reached base safely in 20 consecutive games. Last season he played in the California League/ Carolina League All-Star Game going 3-5 with 2 RBI capturing MVP honors. Bell hit .370 with 22 home runs and 83 RBI with the Lancaster JetHawks last season earning both California League Rookie of the Year award and California League MVP honors. He was promoted to Double-A Portland on July 5th. In time split between Lancaster and Portland in 2007, Bell led all Red Sox minor leaguers with a .337 average, ranked 2nd with 26 home runs and 105 RBI, and ranked 3rd among all minor leaguers with 118 runs scored. Bell was selected by the Red Sox in 39th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.

Michael Bowden has posted a 7-4 record in 17 starts for the Sea Dogs this season. He ranks second in the Eastern League in strikeouts with 89 and his 2.48 ERA ranks third in the league. He is the seventh ranked prospect in the Red Sox organization according to Baseball America. He began the 2007 season at Single-Lancaster posting a 2-0 record with a 1.37 ERA earning a promotion to Double-A Portland on May 14th. In 19 games with Portland, Bowden was 8-6 with a 4.28 ERA. The 21 year-old was the fifth pick of the Red Sox (47th overall) in the sandwich round (between first and second rounds) of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.

Outfielder Jeff Corsaletti is hitting .298 in 64 games with the Sea Dogs this season. He currently ranks third in the league in runs scored with 51. He leads the team in walks with 47 and is tied for the team lead in doubles with 18. This is Corsaletti's second consecutive Eastern League All-Star Game selection. Corsaletti spent the entire 2007 season with the Sea Dogs hitting .266 with 6 home runs and 58 RBI in 123 games. He finished 2nd in the Eastern League with 93 runs scored, fourth in walks (83), and ninth in on-base percentage (.385). The 25 year-old was named the Allied Home Mortgage Big Dog of the Year (had the most player of the game awards). Corsaletti was drafted by the Red Sox in the sixth round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft.
