NORWICH, CT- With starting hurler Joey Martinez fresh off the disabled list, the Defs rallied behind the man on the bump in a narrow 4-3 win.

After chucking a 1-2-3 first, Martinez struggled in the second. Normally an effective groundball pitcher, Martinez left two balls up in the zone as Jacob Butler and J.P. Arencibia launched back-to-back solo shots as the Cats grabbed a 2-0 advantage.

After a scoreless third and fourth, New Hampshire got back to work in the fifth. Andrew Pinckney came around to score on a Scott Campbell single as the lead swelled to 3-0.

The Defenders answered back big in the home half of the fifth as nine batters came to the dish and six singles brought home four Connecticut runs as the teeter totter shifted to the tune of a 4-3 count in favor of the home team.

Dave McKae took over for Martinez in the seventh. In McKae's work, he allowed no runs, and one base hit en route to his first hold of 2008. Kelvin Pichardo tossed a flawless ninth as he locked down save number five.

The Defs have now won five in a row, a new high for the season and will look to make it six against the Fisher Cats on Thursday at 6:35pm. Fireworks will follow the contest and tickets are still available at ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
