
James Cooper promoted from Tampa to Trenton

Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that OF James Cooper has been promoted from Tampa (High-A) to Trenton. RHP Oneli Perez has cleared waivers and been out-righted to Trenton. OF Jose Tabata has been placed on the Disabled List.
Cooper was hitting .311 in 66 G for Tampa with an HR and 22 RBI. Prior to his promotion, he had a 10-game hitting streak for the Yankees (13 x 36, .361, during the streak). He hit .396 during the month of April (21 x 53) in 15 G. Last season, he split the year between Tampa and Charleston. He had a .259 BA in 32 G with 3 HR and 10 RBI for Tampa. He hit .291 for Charleston in 57 G with 2 HR and 15 RBI. He was originally selected in the 9th round of the 2005 draft by the Yankees.
Tabata was hitting .248 with 3 HR and 36 RBI for Trenton in 79 G. He left Tuesday night's game against Portland with a leg injury. He had a five-game hitting streak, including the game on 7/1 (9 x 20 during the streak). He was hitting .333 against LHP. Tabata went 2 x 5 with a R, HR and a 4 RBI on 6/29. He entered the 2008 season as the third best prospect in the Yankees Minor League System. He had a .307 BA with 5 HR and 54 RBI in 103 G for Tampa (High-A) during 2007. He was signed by the Yankees as non-drafted FA on 8/12/04.
Perez was 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in 3 G for Trenton. He was designated for assignment on 6/29 and cleared waivers. He has also split the season between Charlotte (Triple-A) in the Chicago White Sox Organization, and Buffalo (Triple-A) in the Cleveland Indians Organization. Perez was 0-1 with a 9.53 ERA in 14 G for Charlotte. He was claimed off waivers by the Indians on 5/19 and assigned to Buffalo. He was 0-0 with a 7.11 ERA and 2 SV for Buffalo. Last season, Perez had a 6-2 record with a 2.10 ERA and 16 SV in 59 G for Birmingham (Double-A) in the White Sox Organization. He was originally signed as a non-drafted FA by the San Diego Padres on 2/15/01.
Trenton plays the third game of a four-game series tonight against the Portland Sea Dogs, the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. LHP Chase Wright (6-1, 2.59) will start for Trenton against Portland RHP Kyle Jackson (4-1, 4.82).
