Quality Win...The Aeros jumped to an early 4-0 lead last night and starter Ryan Edell worked six solid innings, picking up the win in Akron's 9-1 victory over Erie. The Aeros scored twice in the first on an RBI groundout from 3B Wes Hodges and an RBI double by RF Stephen Head, and matched that in the second inning on LF Ryan Goleski's lead-off home run and 2B Josh Rodriguez's sacrifice fly. The only blemish on Edell's line came on a solo shot in the fourth by Erie's Dusty Ryan. Akron made it 8-1 in the fifth with an RBI single from Hodges, a two-run double by Head, and an RBI double from 1B Matt Whitney. Head capped the scoring in the seventh with a solo home run, his third extra-base hit of the game. RHPs Erik Stiller and Scott Roehl combined to toss three scoreless innings to close the game.
Why Stop at First?...1B Stephen Head pounded out three extra-base hits on his way to a four-RBI night in Erie yesterday. It is only the second time this season an Aero posted three extra-base hits in a game and the first time since April 6th when Armando Camacaro put up a double and a pair home runs in a seven-RBI explosion in Akron's first win of the season at Harrisburg. All three of Head's hits drove in runs: an RBI double in the second, a two-run two-bagger in the fifth, and a solo homer with two outs in the seventh. Head has an eight-game hitting streak and has also hit in 12 of his last 13 games, with six multi-hit contests in that span. Over his last 13 games, the 2005 second-round pick is hitting .423 (22-52) with eight doubles, four homers, and 13 RBI. On the year, Head is second on the team with a .318 average and has six homers and 28 RBI. Even more remarkable may be his defense, as the native of Raymond, MS has made 27 starts at first base and 19 in right field and has committed just one error at each position.
Fantastic Four...Four Aeros were named to the Southern Division All-Star team today, as 3B Wes Hodges, SS Josh Rodriguez, and RHPs Randy Newsom and J.D. Martin were honored for their first-half accomplishments. Hodges leads the league with 64 RBI in 83 games and carries a .307 batting average with a team-leading nine home runs, while Rodriguez is hitting .269 with four homers and 37 RBI, is second in the league with 53 walks, is tied for third with 51 runs scored, and has a .374 on-base percentage. Martin is 7-3 this season with a 3.26 ERA in 21 appearances. He has not allowed an earned run in his last 15.1 innings, allowing just eight hits and four walks in that span while striking out 20.
The Noose is Loose...Closer Randy Newsom, the fourth Aero named to the All-Star team, probably won't be joining his teammates for the game July 16th after being promoted to Class AAA Buffalo today. The sidewinder set the franchise record for career saves earlier this season, and claimed the single-season mark with his 24th save of the year Monday night.
