Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
PAWTUCKET, R.I. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (49-35) sweep the Pawtucket Red Sox (33-50) during Pawtucket's last homestand before the All-Star Break. This was despite good offensive performances by Chris Owings, Gorkys Hernandez, and Cole Sturgeon, who all recorded two hits and smacked a solo homerun.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre struck first with a second inning homer off the bat of catcher Kyle Higashioka, his 13th homerun of the season. Higashioka ranks third amongst all catchers in the International League in homeruns.
The RailRiders added to their lead in the top of the 3rd with a Tyler Wade double, which drove in Clint Frazier, bringing the score to 2-0. Wade was drove in during the next at bat on a two-run homerun by the RailRiders' second baseman Thairo Estrada, moving the score to 4-0 in favor of the RailRiders.
Pawtucket would not go out quietly, blasting back-to-back homeruns in the bottom of 3rd, the first by Cole Sturgeon and the second by Chris Owings. This would bring the score much closer, at 4-2.
Trying to pull away, Zack Zehner hit his second homerun of the season off of righty Mike Shawaryn in the top of the 9th inning.
Gorkys Hernandez tried to keep the PawSox alive, smoking a two-out solo homerun in the bottom of the 9th. Unfortunately, Pawtucket was unable to muster up any more runs with two outs in the inning.
Sam Travis's heroic on-base streak sadly comes to an end tonight at 34 games, falling 2 games shy of the International League record this season held by Gwinnett Stripers' Travis Demeritte. He went 0-4 with 2 strikeouts on the night.
Mike Shawaryn made his first appearance back at Pawtucket, pitching two innings, giving up 3 hits and a 1 run during the outing.
Teddy Stankiewicz pitched tonight for Pawtucket, tossing 7 solid innings while allowing 6 hits and 4 runs, including two homeruns. He threw 96 pitches, 60 of them being for strikes. With the loss tonight, Stankiewicz's record is now 4-5 heading into the All-Star Break.
The PawSox head out to Lehigh Valley to face off against the IronPigs for a four-game series, which will be the last before the All-Star Break for Pawtucket. Tomorrow's game will kick off at 7:05 p.m with Pawtucket starting righty Ryan Weber (1-2, 6.02 ERA), opposing 25-year old lefthander Cole Irvin (3-0, 2.35 ERA).
Radio coverage of tomorrow's game will be on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:35 p.m.
The PawSox will return home on July 11 (Thursday) following the All-Star Break. On July 12th (Friday), the first 3,000 fans will receive a Jackie Bradley Jr. Gold Glove bobblehead at McCoy Stadium. On July 14 (Sunday), the first 4,000 fans will receive a PawSox cap, compliments of the Rhode Island Lottery & WEEI-FM.
Good tickets are available, and fans can visit the McCoy Stadium box office, which is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. through 5 p.m., and during all home games. Fans can also call (401) 724-7300 or log on to PawSox.com for tickets.
