Mets Early Lead Falls Late in 6-3 Loss to Red Wings on Wednesday Night

Rochester, NY - The Syracuse Mets lost another late lead as the Rochester Red Wings used a four-run seventh inning to beat the Mets, 6-3, on Wednesday night at Frontier Field in front of a crowd of 12,483.

Syracuse (41-44) started the scoring in the top of the first inning. The Mets loaded the bases on two singles and a walk. René Rivera then grounded into a double play, enough to score Rajai Davis from third base to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead.

The Mets added another run in the third. Davis singled with one out. Danny Espinosa then singled to left field, and Davis scored on the play when the throw from the outfield was lobbed to second base as Syracuse took a 2-0 advantage.

Rochester (41-42) got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Former Met farmhand Jordany Valdespin hit a solo home run to lead off the inning, cutting the Mets lead to one, 2-1.

In the fifth, Syracuse added another run. Gavin Cecchini doubled to start the inning. Then after Tim Tebow walked, a Davis sacrifice bunt moved the runners up to second and third. Tejada followed with a ground out that scored Cecchini to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

Another home run brought the Wings within one. Jaylin Davis hit a solo home run with one out in the frame as the Red Wings trimmed the deficit to 3-2.

Rochester scored the decisive runs in the seventh. With Valdespin at third base and Wynston Sawyer at first and one out, Nick Gordon tripled, scoring both runners to give the Red Wings their first lead of the game, 4-3. After a Ronald Torreyes walk, Jake Cave singled to bring home Gordon for a 5-3 edge. Then as Brent Rooker struck out, Cave went to steal second base. Syracuse threw down to second, Cave slowed down to avoid being tagged, and Torreyes beat the throw back to home, stealing from third to score and give Rochester a three-run lead, 6-3.

Syracuse returns home to begin a four-game series against the Buffalo Bisons on Thursday night. First pitch on the Fourth of July is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium.
