Three Baysox named to 2005 EL All-Star Game
June 30, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release
Bowie, MD - Three members of the Bowie Baysox have been selected to participate in the 2005 Hannaford Eastern League All-Star Game on July 13 at Hadlock Field in Portland, ME. 3B Tripper Johnson, RHP Cory Morris, and LHP Scott Rice will represent the Baysox on the Southern Division's roster.
Johnson, 23, has been Bowie's most consistent hitter and run producer this season. Johnson, who was voted to the game as a Rite Aid Fan Selection, leads the Baysox with 41 RBI and is second on the team with 7 home runs. In addition to his hitting, Johnson has provided steady defense at the hot corner; he has committed just 6 errors and leads the Eastern League third basemen in fielding percentage. He was a Carolina League All-Star in 2003 and 2004 while playing for Class A Frederick.
Morris, 26, has been one of the Baysox' most pleasant surprises this season. The right-hander is seventh in the Eastern League with a 2.72 ERA and has put together a 4-2 record in 13 starts with 78 strikeouts. This will be Morris' first All-Star game at any level.
Rice, 23, will make his second straight trip to the Eastern League All-Star Game. The Baysox' second Rite Aid Fan Selection, Rice has been an integral piece of the Baysox bullpen. He opened the season with 11 scoreless outings and is currently 4-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 31 games.
The Eastern League All-Star Game will pit the best players from the Northern Division against those from the Southern Division. The teams were selected through a combination of fan balloting and selections from managers, media and team personnel. A maximum of six players may represent each Eastern League team.
The Baysox had six players named to the Southern Division squad in 2004, when Prince George's Stadium played host to the 2004 3-A-Day of Dairy Eastern League All-Star Game.
The Baysox will wrap up a three-games series in Norwich at 6:05 p.m. tonight with a
doubleheader against the Navigators. The Baysox return to Bowie on Monday, as they
open an eight-game homestand on the Fourth of July. That night the Baysox will
attempt to set a new World Record for most people simultaneously sitting on whoopee
cushions. Tickets for the Fourth of July and all other Baysox home games are
available online at www.baysox.com
