Harper Returns, Leads B-Mets Over New Britain
June 30, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Brett Harper hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth in his first game back with the Binghamton Mets, helping them pick up a 6-4 victory over the New Britain Rock Cats at NYSEG Stadium Thursday night. The B-Mets took two of three from New Britain and four of six on the homestand.
In the second, New Britain (33-46) opened the scoring when Denard Span singled off Yusmeiro Petit, moved to second on a walk and scored after back-to-back groundouts for a 1-0 Rock Cats lead. Luis Jimenez made it 2-0 New Britain with a homer off Petit in the fourth.
However, the B-Mets (38-37) would rally in the sixth to take their first lead of the night. Aarom Baldiris led off the inning by doubling off New Britain starter Glen Perkins, but the next two hitters were retired as Baldiris remained at second. However, Mike Jacobs would bring Baldiris home with a double of his own for Binghamton's first run. After Jacobs stole third and David Bacani walked, Joe Hietpas tied the game with a single to center, scoring Jacobs. Zac Clements followed with a base hit through the right side that brought home Bacani for a 3-2 Binghamton lead.
New Britain scored twice in the eighth on a Doug Deeds RBI triple and a Danny Matienzo RBI single to go back on top 4-3, but the B-Mets re-took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. Jay Caligiuri doubled to center off New Britain reliever Pat Neshak (3-3) before being lifted for pinch-runner Corey Ragsdale who, like Harper, arrived in Binghamton from High-A St. Lucie earlier in the day. Jacobs followed with his second RBI double of the night, scoring Ragsdale and tying the game. After Bacani bunted Jacobs to third and Hietpas struck out, Harper pinch-hit for Clements and launched a two-run shot over the rightfield wall, giving Binghamton the win.
Anderson Garcia (3-0) pitched 1 1/3 shutout innings for his third win in as many appearances.
Friday, the B-Mets start a three-game series at Akron against the Aeros. Orlando Roman (3-3, 5.34) will be on the mound for Binghamton against Akron's Jake Dittler (4-6, 3.22). Game time is 6:35 from Canal Park with the Horizon's Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show kicking off the radio broadcast at 6:20 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
