June 30, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

The Eastern League announced today that pitchers Brian Bannister and Yusmeiro Petit and infielders Chase Lambin and Mike Jacobs have been named to represent the Northern Division in the 2005 Eastern League All- Star Game on Wednesday, July 13th at Hadlock Field in Portland, ME.

Bannister's name has been all over the Eastern League's leaderboards for most of the season. The righthander's currently leading the league in wins (9-2), second in ERA (2.20) and tied for third in strikeouts (84). He also owns one of the league's two nine-inning complete-game shutouts. A seventh-round pick of the Mets in 2003 out of the University of Southern California, the Paradise Valley, Arizona native is in his third pro season, after making eight starts with the B-Mets last season.

Petit, ranked the top pitching prospect in the Mets organization by Baseball America, has been on a strict pitch count much of the season, going 2-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 12 starts. The righthander, who's scheduled to start tonight vs. New Britain, has struck out 58 and walked seven in 52 innings of work. Earlier this month, the Maracaibo, Venezuela native was selected to participate in the Futures Game for the second straight season. The fourth-year pro, originally signed by the Mets as an international free agent prior to the 2002 season, made two regular-season and one postseason start for the B-Mets last year

Lambin, called up to Triple-A Norfolk after Thursday's game, has been one of the biggest surprises for the B-Mets this season, hitting .331 (3rd in the Eastern League) with 14 home runs, 29 RBI and a .657 slugging percentage (2nd). Lambin, who never hit better than .289 or more than 10 home runs in any of his previous three seasons, played six games with Norfolk earlier this month, hitting .421. The Mets' 34th-round pick in 2002 out of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, the Houston native is in his second season with Binghamton and has proven to be one of the more versatile players on the ballclub, playing 31 games at third base, eight at shortstop, two at second base and four in leftfield. The Eastern League has yet to name someone to take Lambin's spot on the Northern Division team.

After a slow start, Jacobs has become the B-Mets' primary run producer, hitting .308 (8th in the EL) with 15 home runs (tied 4th), 53 RBI (tied 4th) and a .553 slugging percentage (3rd). The first baseman-catcher has three multi-homer games this season, his second in Binghamton after winning the Mets Minor League Player of the Year Award with the B-Mets in 2003. The seventh-year pro and San Diego native was originally drafted by the Mets in the 38th round of the 1999 draft out of Grossmont (CA) Junior College.

The Northern Divison and Southern Division All-Star teams are each made up of 24 players chosen by Eastern League fans, coaches and media members. Only the host Portland Sea Dogs have more All-Stars on the Northern Divison squad than the B-Mets' four.

Tonight, the Binghamton Mets wrap up a six-game homestand with a 7:00 game against the New Britain Rock Cats at NYSEG Stadium. After a three-game series at Akron over the weekend, the B-Mets return home for a four-game set against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats starting Monday, July 4th, Binghamton's last homestand before the two-day Eastern League All-Star Break.
