Altoona Curve News Release
Portland, ME-- Paul Maholm pitched eight strong innings allowing just three hits as the Altoona Curve (43-35) moved back into sole possession of first place in the E.L. South with a 7-0 win over the Portland Sea Dogs, Thursday night at Hadlock Field in Portland.
Maholm (5-2), who was selected earlier in the day as a replacement to the Major League All-Star Futures Game set for July 10th in Detroit, struck out eight and walked one to pick up the win. Over his last two starts, Maholm has allowed just one earned run in 15 innings (0.60 ERA), recording 15 strikeouts.
The lefty received all the run support he would need in the first inning as Rajai Davis started the game with a leadoff walk against Sea Dog starter Jon Lester (5-2).
After advancing to second on a ground out by Javier Guzman, Davis scored on a single to left field by Jose Bautista.
Bautista, 2-for-5 on the night, hit his 10th home run of the season and had two RBI. Over his last 18 games, the All-Star third baseman is now batting .368 (28-for-76) with six home runs and 27 RBI.
The Curve added to their lead in the second frame. After Lester walked the bases loaded, Guzman delivered a one-out, two-run single to right field scoring Jorge Cortes and Carlos Maldonado.
Altoona added some more insurance in the final two innings and shutout an opponent by a 7-0 score for the third time this season.
With the win, the Curve have gone 10-4 in their last 14 games away from Blair County Ballpark after starting the season 8-14 on the road. The Curve finished the month of June with a 16-13 record marking the 14th consecutive non-losing month dating back to August 2002.
The Curve will travel to New Hampshire to face the FisherCats this weekend. Friday night, Altoona right-hander Paul Stewart (4-7, 4.56) will face righty Ismael Ramirez (5-8, 3.89) in a 6:35 PM start.
