All-Stars Shine in Baysox 4-0 Win at Norwich

June 30, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
Chesapeake Baysox News Release

NORWICH, Conn. - Earlier today, Tripper Johnson and Cory Morris found out that they had been named to the 2005 Eastern League All-Star Game.

To celebrate, Johnson hit a two-run home run and Morris pitched five shutout inning while striking out six as the Baysox won at Norwich, 4-0.

The game was to be the first of a doubleheader, but the second game was cancelled due to heavy fog. It will be made up in a future series between the two teams, but will have to be played in Bowie as the Baysox do not return to Dodd Stadium this season.

Brandon Fahey sparked the Baysox offense with a one-out triple in the top of the first. Johnson then stepped up to the plate and sent an offering from Seung Song over the left field wall for a two-run home run, his eighth of the season. Simon Pond followed with a single, stole second, and scored on Joey Hammond's double.

The Baysox got off to a fast start and were able to ride Morris' arm the rest of the way. The right-hander ran his record to 5-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.55. Morris gave just two hits and a pair of walks to the Navigators, and only allowed two runners to reach second base.

Bowie made it 4-0 with a run in the first. Morgan Clendenin and Peter Bergeron hit consecutive singles to start the inning, and the former came around to score on a double by Fahey.

BAYSOX NOTES: RHP Jason Grimsley worked the third appearance of his rehab assignment with the Baysox, pitching a perfect ninth inning while striking out one...Johnson's All-Star credentials include a team-high 43 RBI and a solid .276 average. His 8 homers are second only to Pond (9), and he leads Eastern League third basemen in fielding percentage. In addition to his low ERA, Morris has struck out 85 batters, which would have placed him third in the league...One other member of the Baysox will be traveling to Portland for the All-Star Game - LHP Scott Rice will make his second straight appearance in the game after pitching to the tune of a 1.74 ERA and compiling a record of 4.1 in 31 games.

ON DECK: The Baysox travel to New Britain for a three-game series against the Rock Cats, beginning at 7:05 p.m. on Friday.
