Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Seven Spot
A seven-run fifth propelled the New Britain Rock Cats to a 12-6 victory over the Binghamton Mets in the opener of a three-game series last night at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets led 5-1 after two innings, but Brian Bannister couldn't hold it, picking up his second loss in 11 decisions this season. The Rock Cats put the game away in the eighth and ninth, combining for four runs, three of them unearned. Chase Lambin, Victor Hall and Jay Caligiuri all homered and Aarom Baldiris added an RBI triple for the B-Mets, who lost for the second time in three games.
When It Rains, It Pours
New Britain's seven-run fifth marked the second time in four days and fourth time this season the B-Mets had allowed seven or more runs in an inning, with all four occurrences taking place at NYSEG Stadium (9-run 5th, Sat. vs. ERI; 7-run 1st, 6/15 vs. NH; 10-run 4th, 5/1 vs. ERI).
Going Deep
By hitting his 10th home run of the season last night, Caligiuri became the third B-Met to reach double figures in longballs this season, joining Mike Jacobs (14) and Lambin (13). New Britain and Trenton are the only other teams with three players who've hit 10 or more homers. Binghamton's 66 home runs tie them for 5th in the 12-team Eastern League and a B-Met has homered in each of the team's last five games.
Welcome Back Chase
Last night, Lambin was 1 for 4 with a homer and is 6 for 16 with two home runs and two doubles in four games since returning to the B-Mets after a six-game trial with AAA Norfolk. Including his six games with the Tides, Chase is 14 for his last 35 (.400), hitting safely in nine of his last ten games.
On The Mound
RHP Ken Chenard (5-6, 4.73)
Last Time Out: Thu. @ NB (ND): 0+ IP, R, 0 H, BB, 0 K (L 10-2)...After walking Tommy Watkins and hitting Ben Pattee, Ken left the game with a mild forearm strain. Watkins would score while reliever Rafael Lopez was on the hill. It was the shortest outing of the year for Ken and only the sixth time in 15 starts he failed to go at least five innings.
This Season: Prior to his last start, Ken was on a roll, lasting a season-high seven innings in consecutive starts, winning one and allowing 10 hits and just one walk in 14 innings. Although the righthander has allowed a team-high 11 home runs, only one of them have come in his last four starts after another four-start stretch that saw him serve up six longballs. Ken's allowed three earned runs or fewer in 13 of his 15 starts, but 19 of the 37 earned runs he's allowed this year have come in the first two innings (6.11 ERA).
Against New Britain: Ken also faced the Rock Cats three times in 2004, losing his lone start against them at New Britain Stadium on July 16th, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks, striking out five, in six innings. However, Ken left that game trailing 2-1 in a 5-3 B-Mets loss. 2004 vs. New Britain: 1-1, SV, 2.30, 3 G, GS, 15 2/3 IP, 5 BB, 15 K.
Background: The Victorville, CA native is in his seventh pro season after being selected by New York in the 46th round of the 1998 draft out of Fullerton (CA) Junior College. Last season, he tied for the B-Mets team lead in wins, going 9-6 with a 4.45 ERA in 27 games, 17 of them starts. Before coming to Binghamton, Ken spent most of the previous three seasons with High-A St. Lucie.
