Third Period Comeback Falls One Goal Short

October 17, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

NORFOLK, VA- The Wheeling Nailers played two great periods on Saturday night, as they clashed with the Norfolk Admirals for the second time on the weekend. However, it was the first period that did the visitors in, as the Admirals scored three times, building a 3-0 lead, before ultimately holding on for a 4-2 win at Norfolk Scope Arena. Jarrett Burton had both tallies for the Nailers, giving him three in two games.

The first period didn't go the way the Nailers had intended, as the Admirals stormed out of the gates with a physical frame, which also featured three goals. Greg Chase opened the scoring at the 7:12 mark, banging in a third chance, after Josh Currie and Maxime Legault were both denied by Brian Foster. 4:43 later, Norfolk utilized its power play for the second goal, as Mathieu Brisebois walked into the top of the left circle, sneaking a wrist shot inside the left post. Michael Pelech added a shorthanded marker with 5:17 remaining in the stanza, roofing a backhander on a breakaway.

Neither team was able to connect for a goal in the second period, but in the third, the Nailers began to make a comeback. Wheeling cut the deficit to two at the 5:50 mark, when Jarrett Burton won an offensive zone face-off, then drove to the front of the net, where he tapped in the rebound of Derek Army's wrister from the left point. Later in the stanza, Burton struck again, as the Nailers cashed in on a second power play chance. This time, the setup came from Riley Brace, with Burton redirecting a pass in at the top of the crease. Brett Stern also picked up an assist for his first professional point. Unfortunately, the comeback fell just short, as Maxime Legault knocked in an empty net goal with ten seconds remaining for a 4-2 final score.

Ty Rimmer turned in an excellent performance in goal for Norfolk, stopping 38 of the 40 shots he faced. Brian Foster was saddled with the loss for Wheeling, making 20 saves on 23 shots.

The Nailers will play the first of three October home games on Saturday night, when they battle Brampton at 7:35. There will be a pregame concert by Bon Journey, inflatables, a team introduction, and more, starting at 4:30, and all fans in attendance will receive a magnetic schedule, courtesy of Panhandle Cleaning & Restoration.

Individual tickets, season tickets, mini plans, and group tickets are on sale now, with prices starting as low as $10 per seat. For tickets and more information, call the Nailers at (304) 234-GOAL or online at wheelingnailers.com.
