Steelheads Rout Rush in Season-Opener
October 17, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Colton Beck scored his first two goals of the season and Andre Bouvet-Morrissette tacked on three assists as the Idaho Steelheads skated to a 5-1 victory over the Rapid City Rush on home ice in Neil Graham's head coaching debut.
The Steelheads' special teams were in mid-season form, as Idaho went 2-for-4 on the power play and killed off eight of the nine power plays afforded the Rush, adding a short-handed goal for good measure.
Cole Martin opened the scoring for the Steelheads at 11:15 of the first period when his backhand shot from the left point snaked its way through traffic and then through the legs of Rapid City goaltender Nic Riopel. It was the culmination of three consecutive shifts of heavy forecheck pressure by the Steelheads, and after Riopel lost his goal stick into the corner, the opening was there for Martin's first professional goal.
Beck, named an assistant captain earlier in the week, extended the lead midway through the second period when he drove to the net and accepted a pass from Bouvet-Morrissette out of the near corner. Beck moved in on goal and jammed the puck underneath Riopel. Beck would add the Steelheads' final insurance goal at 13:49 of the third when his back-foot wrist shot deflected off of Rush defenseman Michael Young and into the net to make it 5-1.
The Steelheads' other newly-appointed assistant captain in the lineup got in on the offense as well, finishing a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing play at the back post for another Steelheads power play goal that made it 4-0. It was Carroll's first game in over a year after spending the 2014-15 season earning a Master's Degree. Jefferson Dahl opened the third period with a short-handed goal just 33 second in, forcing a turnover on the forecheck and driving to the slot to fire a wrist shot past Riopel and make it 3-0.
Eric Hartzell was solid in his Steelheads debut between the pipes, stopping 22 of 23 shots against, the loan blemish a power play rebound goal at 8:13 of the third period by Daniel O'Donoghue. Hartzell was also a factor on the penalty kill, three times clearing the puck the length of the ice himself during a four-minute double-minor to Taylor Peters in the third period.
The Steelheads and Rush meet again tomorrow night at CenturyLink Arena, starting at 7:10
