South Carolina Stingrays News Release
The South Carolina Stingrays host Opening Night this evening as they face-off against the Reading Royals at 7:05 p.m. The contest is Mother Emanuel AME Church Family Night and the Stingrays will be wearing special "Charleston Strong" jerseys that will be auctioned off on Auctions.NHL.com.
Head-to-Head:
Last Season: Stingrays defeated Reading in 7 games in the East Division Semifinals.
All-Time: The Stingrays are 16-11-3 all-time versus reading.
MOTHER EMANUEL AME CHURCH FAMILY NIGHT
The Stingrays host Mother Emanuel AME Church Family Night this evening to honor and remember all impacted by a church shooting that occurred in June in Charleston. Nine people died, and there were three survivors. The survivors will be in attendance tonight. The special "Charleston Strong" jerseys the Stingrays are wearing this evening will be auctioned off with proceeds going to the children of the victims. The auction will be held on Auctions.NHL.com in partnership with NHL Auctions and MeiGray.
BANNER RAISING
The Stingrays will raise 2015 East Division Champions and 2015 Eastern Conference Champions banners during the first intermission tonight. The Stingrays 2014-2015 season included a 23-game win streak and saw the club advance to the Kelly Cup Finals.
WELCOME BACK
Returners on the Season-Opening Roster include forward Patrick Gaul, skating in his fourth season with the Stingrays, and Joe Devin, who played a large role in the club's playoff run last season. Brett Cameron returns to the team after joining the Stingrays late last year following his NCAA career at Alaska-Anchorage. On the blue line, Wade Epp and Marcus Perrier return, as does Brendan Ellis, who missed all of last season due to injury.
JOHNSTON SWITCHES SIDES
Forward Andrew Johnston played with Reading last season, scoring 20 points in 42 games. The Saskatoon native was obtained by South Carolina for future considerations from Missouri last week. Johnston will normally wear #26 for the Stingrays, but will wear #13 in the "Charleston Strong" jersey tonight.
NHL EXPERIENCE IN NET
Both teams boast goaltender with National Hockey League experience. South Carolina's Mark Dekanich played one game in the NHL with Nashville in 2010. Connor Knapp had a strong season for Reading last year, and injures led him to being called up for two games with the Buffalo Sabres during the 2013-2014 season.
