Stingrays Notch 2-1 Win over Reading on Opening Night
October 17, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC- Brett Cameron scored two goals and Mark Dekanich stopped 28 shots to lead the South Carolina Stingrays to a 2-1 victory over the Reading Royals on Opening Night at the North Charleston Coliseum.
Cameron, who returns to the squad after a brief stint last year, got the crowd of 4,739 to its feet 9:46 into the game. Defenseman Marcus Perrier launched a shot from the left point that was redirected by Cameron. The change of directions fooled Reading goalie Connor Knapp and put South Carolina up 1-0. David Pacan also assisted on the play.
South Carolina added to its lead with a goal on a rebound midway through the second period. It was Cameron scoring again, knocking a loose puck past Knapp from the crease. Wade Epp's shot from the right point off a faceoff win fooled Knapp. The goaltender made the initial save, but dropped the rebound and Cameron converted at 8:18 to make it 2-0.
Both goaltenders made several key saves, but it was Dekanich that stole the show. In his first game with the Stingrays, the netminder made several fantastic saves including a sprawling save on Joe Rehkamp early in the third period.
Reading outshot South Carolina 29-25 on the evening. Both teams failed to convert on the power play, as Reading was 0-for-4 and South Carolina was 0-for-3.
Saturday's game was Mother Emanuel AME Church Family Night as the Stingrays honored those impacted by the June church shooting in Charleston. The team wore special "Charleston Strong" jerseys that will be auctioned off on Auctions.NHL.com with proceeds going to children of the victims. The auction closes November 10.
The two teams meet again tomorrow for a 3:05 p.m. puck drop at the North Charleston Coliseum. It's a Crews Subaru and Charleston County Parks Family Days game, featuring $5 Kids Tickets and $5 Kids Meals.
