Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals scored three goals in the first period and held on late to top the Wheeling Nailers, 4-2, on Saturday night at Scope.

The Admirals finished the first period with a dominating shut out, scoring three goals on Wheeling, with a total of 11 shots on net. Greg Chase hit the back of the net 8:12 into the game off of a deflected shot by Josh Currie. The loose puck slid into the slot towards an awaiting Chase who cleaned up the rebound for a 1-0 lead.

During the Admirals' first power play of the night, Mathieu Brisebois' wrister from the middle of the zone beat Wheeling netminder Brian Foster at 11:55 of the opening frame to put Norfolk up, 2-0.

With five minutes left in the first, Admiral Michael Pelech found daylight along the left wall, corralled a pass ahead from Gabriel Verpaelst, and flicked a backhander top shelf for the shorthanded goal and a 3-0 advantage.

After a scoreless second period, Wheeling finally broke through for their first goal. On the man advantage, the Nailers' Jarrett Burton snuck a sliding shot past the right skate of Norfolk goaltender Ty Rimmer at 5:50 to close the gap to two.

Burton struck again on another power play six minutes later thanks to a feed from Riley Brace. Burton's one-timer down low made it just a 3-2 game with less than eight minutes to play in regulation.

A few key stops by Rimmer and an empty-net goal proved to be enough for Norfolk's first win of the season, 4-2. Rimmer also picked up his first win, saving 38 of 40 shots on the night. Foster turned aside 20 of 23 opportunities. Wheeling converted on two of a whopping nine power plays, while the Admirals went 2-for-4.

The Admirals are headed to Florida next week where they will face the Florida Everblades on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. and the Orlando Solar Bears Thursday and Saturday at 7 p.m.
