
Norfolk Drops Season Opener to Wheeling, 3-0

NORFOLK, Va. - The Admirals opened the 2015-16 season Friday night at Scope Arena with a 3-0 loss to the Wheeling Nailers.
After a scoreless first, former Admiral Ty Loney put the Wheelers on the board, netting a goal 1:16 into the second period. The Nailers' John McCarron intercepted a pass at the Admirals' blue line before feeding Loney, who banked a shot in off the left post past Norfolk's goalie Ty Rimmer. The second period ended with Wheeling ahead, 1-0.
In the third, Loney hit net again to up the score to 2-0. The University of Denver product took a pass from behind the net and slipped a shot between Rimmer's left side and the near post from a sharp angle at 3:07 of the final frame. An empty-net goal at the end of the third concluded the season opener, sending Wheeling to a 3-0 victory.
Frankie Palazzese for Wheeling saved all 23 shots to earn the shutout in his season debut, while Ty Rimmer saved 32 of 35 shots. Both teams were scoreless on the man advantage; Wheeling went 0-for-4, Norfolk went 0-for-3.
The two teams meet again tomorrow night at Scope. Puck drops at 7:15 p.m.
