Texas Stars News Release
Winnipeg, MTB, Canada - The Texas Stars (35-24-4-6, 80 points) were defeated by the Manitoba Moose (38-26-1-5, 82 points) 4-3 in front of 9,129 fans at the MTS Centre on Friday night. The Moose held off a late surge from Texas to preserve the victory after Stars center Travis Morin scored with 4:26 remaining in regulation. Four different goal scorers got on the board for the Moose, who chased Texas goalie Tyler Beskorowany at 7:16 of the second period. Despite stopping 15 of 16 in a relief effort, goalie Richard Bachman (22-16-5) took the loss. Moose goalie Tyler Weiman (14-9-2) stopped 32 Texas shots for the win. Texas center Aaron Gagnon and defenseman Dan Spang each finished with a goal and an assist in the defeat. The Stars and Moose conclude their season series at 2:00 PM on Sunday at the MTS Centre.
The Stars jumped out to a fast 1-0 lead as center Aaron Gagnon tallied 23 seconds into the game's first period. Texas forwards Ondrej Roman and Francis Wathier each had an assist on Gagnon's 13th goal of the year and a 1-0 Stars lead. The Moose countered with a pair of special team's goals, with the first goal coming at 7:40 on the power play. Manitoba left wing Bill Sweatt found Cody Hodgson in the slot for his 16th goal of the year and a 1-1 tie. The Moose pushed in front 2-1 at 15:21 as Guillaume Desbiens scored off a breakaway. Desbiens' 11th goal of the year was only the seventh shorthanded goal allowed all year by Texas. Manitoba carried a 2-1 lead in to the first intermission.
The Moose extended its lead to 3-1 at 7:40 of the second period. Jordan Schroeder picked up a loose puck in the Texas zone and launched a shot from the right-wing circle over the shoulder of Tyler Beskorowany. Schroeder's 10th goal of the season ended Beskorowany's night with 11 saves on 14 shots. The Stars responded quickly at 8:59 as defenseman Dan Spang scored his 10th goal of the year to trim the Moose lead to 3-2. Manitoba pushed the lead back to two goals at 13:05 after Sergei Shirokov beat Texas goalie Richard Bachman for his 20th goal of the year and a 4-2 lead.
Texas pulled within a goal at 4-3 with 4:26 left in the third period with a power-play goal by Travis Morin. Gagnon and Spang each had an assist on Morin's 17th goal of the year at 15:34.
