Milwaukee Admirals News Release
San Antonio, TX--Chris Mueller scored a goal and added two assists to help the Milwaukee Admirals defeat the San Antonio Rampage Friday, 4-1, at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.
Three of the Admirals goals were scored in a span of 1:38 in the second period.
The Admirals extended their streak of games on the road with points to 14. Milwaukee hasn't lost on the road in regulation time since Jan. 13 at Manitoba. Milwaukee also extended its lead over second place Houston to three points. The Admirals have played two fewer games than the Aeros.
Making his first start since Feb. 19 (a 3-0 win over Peoria), goalie Jeremy Smith stopped 28 shots to earn his 11th win of the season.
After a scoreless first period that saw just one penalty, the second period got crazy. Rampage forward Bracken Kearns deflected a pass into the net at 3:12 to give the Rampage a 1-0 lead.
The Admirals got on the board with a power play goal at 11:29. Defenseman Aaron Johnson fired a shot from the left point that ricocheted into the net off a Rampage defender's stick for his ninth goal of the season and second on the power play. Mueller and Teemu Laakso recorded the assists.
Just 1:14 later, Laakso scored after the Admirals hard forecheck led to a turnover. Falling to the ice on the left wing boards, Mueller poked the puck to Laakso in the slot for a slapshot that beat Rampage goalie Joe Fallon for his fourth goal of the season. Mueller and Gabriel Bourque were awarded the helpers.
Andreas Thuresson scored his tenth goal of the season just 24 seconds later. Connor Shields crashed into the San Antonio zone and knocked the puck to Mark Santorelli behind the Rampage goal. Santorelli moved right but flipped the puck back to the left post for Thuresson to lift into the net and give the Admirals a 3-1 lead.
At the 13:31 mark of the second period Admirals defenseman Scott Ford engaged in a fight with Rampage forward Dane Byers. The remaining skaters also got involved. Four players from each team were sent to the penalty box. Admirals forward Kelsey Wilson and San Antonio defenseman Nolan Yonkman each received game misconducts. In total, 11 penalties were whistled for a total of 66 penalty minutes.
Mueller added an empty net goal, assisted by Ryan Thang, with 7.7 seconds remaining in the game.
Milwaukee set a season high in penalty minutes as a team with 40. The former high was 37 at Chicago March 4. The Rampage also set the highwater mark for penalty minutes against the Admirals with 44. The former record was 42 by Peoria on Jan. 28.
