BINGHAMTON, NY - Mark Parrish, Mark Voakes and Derek Whitmore each scored to lead the Portland Pirates to a 3-2 win over the Binghamton Senators in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 3,131 at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
The win moved the Pirates to 41-18-5-2 on the season and within one point of Manchester for first in the Atlantic Division after the Monarch dropped a 1-0 decision to the Connecticut Whale tonight.
Jim O'Brien scored both goals for the Senators, now 34-27-3-4 on the year.
O'Brien netted the lone goal of the opening period to give the Senators a 1-0 lead after one. The Pirates jumped out quickly in the second with goals by Parrish and Voakes in the opening 4:19 to grab a 2-1 lead. O'Brien connected for his second of the game less than two minutes after the Pirates grabbed the lead to send the two teams into the third tied at two. Whitmore scored what turned out to be the deciding goal 12 minutes into the third.
The Pirates out shot the Senators 35-21 in the game as David Leggio posted the win.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were 1. Whitmore, 2. O'Brien and 3. Parrish.
The Pirates continue a three-game road trip tomorrow (Saturday) when they travel to Hershey to face the Bears at 7 p.m. Sunday the trip concludes in Providence with a 4:05 p.m. game in Providence against the Bruins. Both games can be heard live on News Talk 95.5 WLOB and on-line at portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m. from Hershey, and 3:45 p.m. m Providence.
The Pirates return to the Civic Center on Tuesday to host their second annual School Day Game, presented by Irving Oil and Modern Woodmen of America. The Worcester Sharks come to town for a special 11 a.m. start. This special event is designed to help promote students to eat healthy and stay active and educated. Students participating receive a complimentary health booklet prior to the game that has fun interactive activities. The UNUM Challenge also continues and the Pirates can seal their third UNUM Challenge victory in the past five years with a win.
