March 18, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Worcester Sharks 4-1 on Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 9,185 fans. The P-Bruins received goals from Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman, Stefan Chaput, David Ling, and Trent Whitfield.
After back and forth play in the opening minutes, Providence lit the lamp first at 6:57 of the period. The line of Whitfield, LaVallee-Smotherman and Kirk MacDonald continued their point-streak when Whitfield picked up the loose puck off a MacDonald shot before LaVallee-Smotherman drilled it past a sprawled Carter Hutton for his 12th goal of the season. Continuously crashing the net, the P-Bruins came up with numerous scoring opportunities, most notably halfway through the frame when a goal was called off. The P-Bruins were able to keep the Sharks off the board with solid play by Anton Khudobin and a flawless penalty kill to go into the first intermission leading 1-0.
Khudobin continued to be a brick wall in the second frame, denying a Worcester breakaway opportunity in the opening minutes of the period. The P-Bruins continued to dance around the Worcester defense and challenge Hutton and found the back of the net at the 12:43 mark. Matt Bartkowski and Andrew Bodnarchuk broke the puck out of the zone and found a breaking Chaput, who beat Hutton five-hole with a laser from the high circle. The P-Bruins took a 3-0 lead with under two minutes to play in the frame when Ling blasted a slap shot from the slot after a clean break out from Lane MacDermid and Yury Alexandrov.
Providence came out flying in the third frame and got on the board at 3:44 to take a 4-1 advantage. Maxime Sauvé fed Whitfield in the corner, who attempted a give-and-go, but Whitfield's pass was deflected off a Worcester defensemen's skate past Harri Sateri, who relieved Hutton for the final frame. David Laliberte also assisted on the play. Worcester answered at 7:19 of the period when John McCarthy tucked the puck past a sprawling Khudobin, but it proved too little, too late as Providence held on for the 4-1 win.
Khudobin earned the win, stopping 21 attempts. Hutton suffered the loss, blocking 30 shots before being relieved by Sateri, who made 22 saves.
The P-Bruins travel to Connecticut on Saturday to face the Whale before returning to The Dunk on Sunday in a 4:05 p.m. meeting with the Portland Pirates for Poster Night.
