Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
CATORCE!: The RailRiders and Red Wings went toe-to-toe for 14 innings before Austin Romine connected on a broken-bat single up the middle to score the winning run in a 3-2 standoff on Friday night at PNC Field.
ROMINE'S REDEMPTION, PART II: Romine missed nearly a week after Rochester starter Lester Oliveros drilled him in the head with a fastball on June 12 after allowing back-to-back home runs to Rob Refsnyder and Kyle Roller. Romine returned to action six days later and delivered six RBIs including a grand slam to straightaway center in a June 18 win at the Red Wings' Frontier Field.
LOOKIN' GOOD, FEELIN' GOOD: MLB rehabber Michael Pineda fired 4.2 innings of one-run ball. He gave up three hits, walked none and struck out three on 62 pitches (45 strikes). Today Joe Girardi announced that he will return to the Yankees' rotation on Wednesday versus the Astros as part of a six-man rotation.
FAR FROM BELLY ITCHERS: Six relievers combined to allow one run on three hits over 9.1 frames after Pineda.
ALL IN: Nineteen of the RailRiders' 25 active players saw action in the game. The lone exceptions were the other four starters and relievers Andrew Bailey and Branden Pinder. The seven hurlers used fell one short of the RailRiders era record set in the 20-inning win over Toledo on July 25, 2013.
VERY NICE, GREAT SUCCESS!: SWB is over .500 at home for the first time since besting Syracuse on Opening Night. The club is 12-3 at PNC Field since July 24.
CRYSTAL BALLIN': The RailRiders have four games remaining against second-place Rochester and five versus third-place Buffalo. SWB has played above .500 against the other three teams in the division (29-15), but not versus the Red Wings (8-8) or Bisons (5-7). SWB has magic numbers of 13 and 12 with Rochester and Buffalo respectively. Any combination of SWB wins and losses by each foe totaling to those figures would cement a higher finish for the RailRiders. SWB's magic number for both Lehigh Valley and Syracuse's divisional eliminations sits at three.
TIGHTROPE WALKERS: Sixteen (55%) of SWB's last 29 games have been decided by one run and 22 (76%) have come down to two or less. It has gone 20-9 (.690) over the longer span and owns the IL's best one-run record at 26-16 (.619).
ALL ABOUT THE BENJAMIN: Ben Gamel has hits in 22 of his last 24 with multiple knocks in 15 of those games. In that time, he has slashed .400/.458/.684/1.142 with 14 extra-base hits (5-3B, 4HR), 17RBIs and 20 runs scored. SWB's MVP candidate leads the IL with 12 outfield assists and co-paces all of MiLB with 14 triples, two shy of the single-season franchise record set by Shane Victorino in his 2005 IL MVP season. Gamel entered today with the IL's third-best batting average (.306). He also ranks among the IL's best in hits (4th, 134), slugging (2nd, .477), extra-base hits (5th, 43), runs scored (3rd, 68) and total bases (4th, 209).
KNOW YOUR COLE: Cole Figueroa has also enjoyed a fantastic 2015. He stands just behind Gamel with a .305 average, good for fourth in the IL, and leads the loop in TPA/K ratio (1st, 19.78:1).
SWING & A MISS: Top Twins pitching prospect Jose Berrios struck out 10 over his seven innings to set a new Triple-A career-high mark. Berrios became the first opposing hurler to strike out double-digit SWB hitters since Jeff Locke struck out 10 SWB Yankees on Aug. 3, 2012. The next season, Locke was an NL All-Star for the Pirates when he went 10-7 with a 3.52 ERA.
OFF THE RAILS: Last night's game fell one inning and three minutes shy of tying the 15-inning win over Lehigh Valley on April 20 as SWB's longest this year...The paid crowd of 10,000 made for the fourth complete sellout of the season to tie the RailRiders era record...It was also the team's 13th fixed-seat (7,115+) sellout...The team announced 10,000 fans at just two games last season and four times in year one of the RailRiders era (2013)...Three of the four complete sellouts in 2013 featured a rehabbing Derek Jeter while the fourth came on the Fourth of July...All of the RailRiders' 13 hits last night were singles...SWB improved to a league-best 8-3 in extra-inning affairs...The RailRiders' fifth walk-off win of the season was also their third in 11 days.
