Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Pawtucket, RI) - Lehigh Valley starter Alec Asher blanked Pawtucket for seven innings and combined with two relievers on a six-hit shutout as the IronPigs topped the Pawtucket Red Sox, 2-0, on Saturday night to even the weekend series at one win apiece before 7,651 fans at McCoy Stadium.
Asher (2-0) allowed just five hits and did not walk a batter while striking out three. Pawtucket starter Rich Hill (1-1) pitched well but allowed a pair of runs in the seventh inning to provide Lehigh Valley (56-71) the only two runs of the night.
After Hill kept the IronPigs off the scoreboard and allowed only two hits through six innings, Brian Bogusevic led off the seventh with an infield single to shortstop. Erik Kratz followed with a double to put runners on second and third, and Russ Canzler then singled home Bogusevic to put Lehigh Valley on the board.
The next batter was Tommy Joseph, who bounced into an around-the-horn double play that plated Kratz from third and made the score 2-0. Hill would only permit five hits while not walking a batter and striking out five.
For PawSox Dalier Hinojosa relieved Asher in the eighth and retired the side in order before closer Dustin McGowan pitched a quick ninth inning to record his 11th save of the season. Dayan Diaz and Ryan Cook each worked a scoreless inning of relief behind Hill for Pawtucket.
Sandy Leon (2-for-4) collected a pair of the PawSox' six hits. Bogusevic went 2-for-4 with a run scored to pace the Pigs' six-hit attack.
The rubber-match of the series is scheduled for Sunday afternoon with first pitch at 1:05pm. Right-hander William Cuevas (1-2, 2.50) will get the start for Pawtucket while the IronPigs counter with righty Severino Gonzalez (2-5, 4.46).
Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com. Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 12:50 pm.
