SWB Game Notes

July 6, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

UP & DOWN: The RailRiders split a day-night doubleheader with Buffalo yesterday. They won the opener, 4-0, and fell in the nightcap, 6-4.

MMM...DONUT: The shutout victory in game one was the RailRiders' seventh of the season and third at home. It also marked the team's second in three games including the road trip finale at Pawtucket.

CRUISIN': Joel De La Cruz (6-0) shined in matinee by blanking the Bisons over six innings on just 53 pitches (8.8/inning). He yielded three hits, all singles, walked none and struck out one. He is tied for the team lead in wins despite starting just four times among his 11 SWB appearances.

HALL PAZOS: Southpaw James Pazos earned his first Triple-A save with three scoreless innings behind De La Cruz. He gave up just one hit, a single, walked none, hit a batter and whiffed four.

TRIPLE THREAT: In game one, Ben Gamel went 3-for-4 with his league-best ninth triple. The outfielder's triple total trumps or equals three teams in the league: Buffalo (9), Norfolk (8) and Pawtucket (8).

EVERYBODY LOVE ME RIGHT NOW: Catcher Juan Graterol gave SWB life in the nightcap when he clubbed a three-run homer to left that tied the game in the sixth. It made for his first extra-base hit as a RailRider in seven games played.

LET'S GET SERIESOUS: The RailRiders and Bisons have split their eight meetings thus far with the road team winning every game but one. SWB swept the Bisons at Buffalo from June 8-10 and Buffalo has won four of five at PNC Field including a two-game sweep of last weekend's rain-shortened set.

DOUBLE DIPPIN': Yesterday's day-night doubleheader meant a pair of nine-inning games. It was prompted by the June 27 rainout in Moosic. It marked the RailRiders' first day-night doubleheader since a scheduled such twinbill at home against Norfolk on June 22, 2013. The RailRiders also split that double-dip by winning the opener and losing the nightcap.

ARE YOU TOO GOOD FOR YOUR HOME?!: With losses in five of six at PNC Field, the RailRiders stand six games below .500 at PNC Field (20-26) and 13 games over on the road (26-13). The team has hit .283 on the road compared to a .261 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 207 runs in 39 games (5.3/game). At home, the squad has plated 169 runs in 46 games (3.7/game). The pitching has performed worse on the road (3.67 ERA) than at home (3.42 ERA). No IL team has a better road winning percentage than the RailRiders (.667), who have won 19 of 25 away from Moosic.

KNOW YOUR COLE: Cole Figueroa posted multiple hits in each game yesterday. He has logged 11 multi-hit showings in his last 13 games including nine in a row. He went 4-for-9 with a double and two stolen bases on the twinbill. He has lifted his batting average to a season-best .318, good for third in the league. His average sat at .184 after an 0-for-3 day at Norfolk on May 11. Since then, he has hit .391/.438/.531/.969 over 46 games played. In that time he ranks among the IL's best in AVG (1st), OBP (1st), SLG (4th) and OPS (2nd).

BOBBLE BUMP: Honored with a bobblehead in last night's nightcap Rob Refsnyder went 3-for-7 with two walks on the day. Since his 0-for-4 showing against Louisville on June 23 dropped his average to .268, the worst it had been since late April, he has gone 13-for-34 in 11 games for slashes of .382/.560/.441/1.001. His 13 walks in that time are tied for second in all of minor league baseball. His season-long .378 OBP ranks fifth in the IL. His error total has also dropped dramatically month by month: April (7E in 20GP), May (4E in 24GP), June (2E in 27GP), July (0E in 6GP).
