Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Headed into Monday afternoon's game in Columbus, Mike Belfiore held a 3-8 record and came off a start in which he stuck around for 6.0 innings against the Durham Bulls. The left hander would one up himself, as he stuck around for seven full frames, and held the Clippers offense to just two runs on seven hits, striking out four. Will Roberts also pitched a quality start for Columbus throwing 6.0 innings and allowing two runs on six hits .
Before the season got under way the Detroit Tigers organization tagged outfielder Steven Moya as the top prospect amongst all minor league levels and the 6'6" slugger showed why on Monday. In the top of the first Moya teed off on an offering from starter Will Roberts sending it over the right field wall as the Hens took a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third, it was Moya again taking Roberts deep, this time to left as his second solo shot of the game put Toledo out to a 2-0 lead. Also notable on the offensive end for Toledo was Corey Jones who continues to increase his season batting avergae to .301 after a 2-4 day at the plate.
In the bottom of the fourth it was the Clippers' offense, answering with two runs of their own. The first came on an RBI single by Zach Walters, scoring Erik Gonzalez. In the fifth, Tyler Naquin took a page out of Moya's book as he hit a solo home run, off of Belfiore to tie the game at two a piece. In the top of the ninth the Toledo offense struck back once again thanks to its newest member Trayvon Robinson. The outfielder sent a sharp single to right scoring Alexi Casilla and taking the lead back at 3-2 which would stand.
Jose Valdez came on to throw 2.0 innings of scorless relief and earned the win. The two teams are back in action on Tuesday, this time in Toledo as Tim Melville takes the ball at Fifth Third Field at 7:00 pm.
