Charlotte Knights News Release
(LAWRENCEVILLE, GA) - The Charlotte Knights completed a three-game sweep of the Gwinnett Braves with a 2-1 victory at Coolray Field on Monday night. Kyle Drabek allowed one unearned run over six innings pitched to earn his fourth win of the season.
With the Knights ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, a pair of singles and an intentional walk loaded the bases for the Braves, but Matt Lindstrom induced two consecutive fly outs to seal the victory and earn his second save of the season.
Drabek (4-5, 2.64) scattered six hits over six innings pitched, allowing only an unearned run in the third frame. The outing was his third consecutive of at least six innings pitched with two or fewer runs allowed.
Matt Albers and Maikel Cleto also delivered scoreless innings in relief of Drabek - each allowing one hit. Lindstrom then hurled the final frame to earn the save.
Both Knights runs were knocked in by Tyler Saladino, who tallied sacrifice-flies in the third and sixth innings off of Braves starter Alex White. The North Carolina native was saddled with the loss, allowing two runs on two hits and four walks over 5.2 innings pitched.
The Knights recorded a season-high four errors on Monday, but a great defensive play kept the game scoreless in the second inning. With a man on third and no outs, Leury Garcia caught a Todd Cunningham line drive in left field and made a fantastic throw to catch Christian Bethancourt in his attempt to score from third.
Kevan Smith got the scoring started in the top of the third inning, leading off the frame with a triple and scoring on Saladino's first of two sacrifice-flies. The triple was one of only two Knights hits in the game - tying a season-low.
After Mallex Smith singled and scored to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the third, Micah Johnson gave the Knights the 2-1 lead when he walked and eventually scored on Saladino's second RBI.
The Knights return to Uptown Charlotte on Tuesday night for game one of a three-game series against their in-state rival Durham Bulls. Tuesday's game will be "Peanut-Free" so fans with peanut allergies can enjoy BB&T Ballpark in a peanut-free environment.
