Syracuse Mets News Release

Syracuse, NY (7/6/2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs beat the Pawtucket Red Sox, 3-2, Monday afternoon, sweeping the three-game series. Chiefs' starter Joe Ross went five innings, allowing only two hits and striking out four. Dan Butler drove in all three Chiefs runs.

Syracuse (31-54) opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Tony Gwynn, Jr., hit a popup behind second, which fell in between second baseman Jonathan Roof and right fielder Daniel Nava, allowing Gwynn to reach. The next batter, Chris Nelson, followed Gwynn with an infield popup that Roof again lost in the sunlight. Gwynn advanced to third on the misplay and Nelson took first. Butler then smoked a line drive to left-center field, driving in both Gwynn and Nelson on the double and put the Chiefs up 2-0.

Pawtucket (38-48) got one run back in the top of the sixth. Eric Fornataro came in to replace Ross. Roof singled to lead off the inning and then stole second during Nava's at-bat. Roof advanced to third on a groundout by Nava, and scored on a ground out by designated hitter Rusney Castillo. Syracuse led 2-1 after the top of the sixth.

The Chiefs continued the scoring in the bottom of the frame. Ricky Hague started the rally with a one out double off Sox reliever Edwin Escobar. Mario Lisson and Gwynn reached on a hit-by-pitch and walk, respectively. With the bases loaded and one out, Nelson popped into an infield fly. Butler, the next batter, was hit by a pitch, forcing home Hague and increasing the Chiefs' lead to 3-1.

The Red Sox got a run back in the top of the eighth. Mike Miller reached on a one-out single. Roof hit a ground-rule double to right field in the next at-bat, putting runners on second and third with one out. Nava grounded out to second, scoring Miller on the play to bring the Chiefs lead to 3-2.

Syracuse hits the road on Tuesday to start a three-game set at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Chiefs will send right-hander Paolo Espino to the mound to face right-hander Luis Severino with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
