Gwinnett Stripers News Release

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves (42-42) lost a battle of sacrifice flies 2-1 Monday to the Charlotte Knights (48-37), who swept the three-game series at Coolray Field.

The G-Braves have lost each of their five home games against Charlotte this season. Their only two wins in 10 games vs. the Knights came Thursday and Friday at BB&T Ballpark. Gwinnett is now on a four-game losing streak that has dropped the club back to the .500 mark for the first time since June 28 (38-38).

A base hit did not account for any runs between the two clubs on Monday. Tyler Saladino drove in both of Charlotte's runs with sacrifice flies to center field in the third and sixth innings, while the G-Braves got their lone run on a sacrifice fly from Adonis Garcia in the third.

Mallex Smith scored on Garcia's fly ball to right field after he hit a one-out single and advanced to third base when Charlotte right-handed starter Kyle Drabek (W, 4-5) threw wide of first base on a pickoff attempt.

Gwinnett initially fell behind 1-0 in top of the third inning when Kevan Smith crossed home plate on the first of Saladino's sac flies. Smith led off the frame with a triple off G-Braves' right-handed starter Alex White (L, 1-1) on a fly ball down the right-field line that was narrowly beyond the reach of a diving Mycal Jones.

Saladino's second sac fly put Charlotte back in front in the sixth inning, 2-1. Micah Johnson scored on the play after he drew a one-out walk, stole second base and moved to third when catcher Christian Bethancourt's throw went into center field.

White then gave up a single to Jason Coats and a walk to Matt Davidson before exiting in favor of right-handed reliever Peter Moylan, who got Matt Tuiasosopo to ground out to third base to end the inning. White finished 5.2 innings with two runs allowed on two hits and four walks with four strikeouts. He threw 101 pitches, 61 of which were strikes.

Moylan retired each of the four batters he faced, and left-handed reliever Matt Marksberry set the Knights down in order in the eighth. Right-hander Ryan Kelly struck out two of three batters in a perfect ninth inning.

Meanwhile, the G-Braves never had more than one batter reach in a single inning beyond the third. Drabek went 6.0 innings with six hits allowed and an unearned run, no walks, three strikeouts and two wild pitches. Right-hander Matt Albers (H, 3), who is on a Major League rehab assignment for the Chicago White Sox, and right-hander Maikel Cleto (H, 6) each pitched 1.0 inning with one hit allowed.

Right-hander Matt Lindstrom (S, 2) gave up one-out hits to Todd Cunningham and Daniel Castro in the ninth inning, but after intentionally walking pinch hitter Eric Young, Jr., was able to retire Smith and Jose Peraza to end the game.

The G-Braves out-hit the Knights 10-2, and Charlotte made four defensive errors, but Gwinnett went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 runners on base.

Bethancourt and Castro both went 2-for-4 for Gwinnett at the plate, and Smith was 2-for-5 with a run scored.

The only Charlotte batters with a hit were Smith, who finished 1-for-3, and Coats, who went 1-for-4.

The G-Braves open a three-game series against the Norfolk Tides at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday at Coolray Field. Right-hander Kanekoa Texeira (0-2, 4.11 ERA) will start for Gwinnett, while the Tides will counter with right-hander Michael Bowden (6-2, 2.17). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6 p.m.

All Infield Box and Field Box seats are two for the price of one as part of "Two-For-Tuesday" night at the stadium. To purchase tickets, call the Coolray Field Ticket Office at 678-277-0340 or visit GwinnettBraves.com/tickets.
