PawSox Fall 3-2, Get Swept in Syracuse
July 6, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Syracuse, NY) - A popup that was lost in the sun and a bases-loaded hit batter sparked the two rallies that pushed the Syracuse Chiefs to a 3-2 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox on Monday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium. The PawSox - who were held to just five hits - were swept in the series and dropped their ninth straight ballgame.
The PawSox (38-48) plated a run in the sixth and got within one in the eighth. But with runners at the corners and two out, Jackie Bradley, Jr. rapped a hard grounder to second that ended the threat.
Pawtucket starter Brian Johnson (8-6) - making his first start since he was lifted after throwing five pitches in Rochester on June 29 - worked around a hit and a walk in the first. In the second, a popup that was lost in the sun extended the inning, and Dan Butler then ripped a two-run double that pushed the Chiefs ahead 2-0.
Jonathan Roof - who had three hits - led off the sixth inning with a single. Roof stole second and moved to third on a Daniel Nava groundout. Rusney Castillo then bounced out to score Roof and make it a 2-1 game.
Edwin Escobar came on in the sixth; after he struck out Mario Lisson, Escobar yielded a double to Ricky Hague, hit Lisson and walked Tony Gwynn, Jr. After Chris Nelson was retired on an infield fly, Escobar hit Butler to plate the run that proved to be the game winner.
Johnson went five innings and allowed only two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. He was saddled with his sixth loss. Chiefs starter Joe Ross shut the PawSox out for five innings and moved to 2-1.
The PawSox open a three-game series at Lehigh Valley Tuesday night at 7:05. Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 12:50 pm.
The PawSox return home on Friday, July 10th to welcome Lehigh Valley for a three-game series that will lead into the Triple-A All-Star Break. Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
