July 6, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
Oswaldo Arcia's first hit of the night - a walk-off, three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth - gave the Rochester Red Wings a 10-8 win over the Lehigh Valley Monday night at Frontier Field. First place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lost Monday, so the win moves the Wings into a first place tie with the RailRiders.
The Buffalo Bisons come to town Tuesday night to open a three-game Thruway Cup series at 7:05 p.m.; it's also another Fan 4-Pack Night with four tickets, hot dogs, drinks and a yearbook for $36 ($40 day of game).Complete promotion details below...
Hot-hitting Chase d'Arnaud (three hits Sunday) singled to open the game against Wings left-hander Pat Dean, then stole second to put a runner in scoring position with no outs. But three fly ball outs - including one on a long running catch in dead center field by Eric Farris - kept the IronPigs off the scoreboard.
Dean did get some first inning runs from his teammates. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Argenis Diaz drew a walk from starter Anthony Vasquez, and Reynaldo Rodriguez followed with a single. That's when Jose Martinez drilled a 2-1 pitch off the top of the wall in left field, missing a homer by a couple feet. Martinez did get a two-run double, however, for an early 2-0 Red Wings lead.
The IronPigs made another bid to score in the second inning, after Cord Phelps led off with a double. But Dean set down the next three batters to maintain the two-run lead.
Dean dealt with more offensive pressure in the top of the third inning. After retiring the lead off hitter by a swinging strikeout, d'Arnaud and Tyler Henson hit back-to-back singles. Aaron Altherr followed with a three-run home run that gave the IronPigs a 3-2 lead. The Wings' lefty worked himself out of the inning with two more swinging strikeouts.
In the top of the fifth, Dean forced a quick fly out from the lead off hitter, but then gave up a triple to d'Arnaud and a sacrifice fly by Henson that gave the IronPigs a run to add to their lead, 4-2.
The Wings' bats battled back in the bottom of the fifth with base hits by Jorge Polanco and James Beresford, and another walk by Diaz. With the bases loaded, Rodriguez collected his 42nd RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly that closed the gap to 4-3.
Lehigh Valley starter Vasquez was done for the night after five innings, allowed six hits, three earned runs and struck out two.
After a one-out single by Doug Bernier in the bottom of the sixth, Farris smacked a two-base hit down the left field line and pushed across the tying run and made the score 4-4. The Wings' offensive inning continued as Carlos Paulino reached first on a walk. Polanco pushed Farris across the plate with a single and his first RBI as a Red Wing, moved Paulino to third, Farris to second and gave the Wings a 5-4 lead. Beresford added to the lead with a ground ball to first base that allowed Farris to slide home and extend the Wings' lead to 6-4.
Dean worked seven innings and allowed six hits and four earned runs, striking out six. Dean threw 86 pitches, 61 for strikes. Dean has pitched at least five innings in all of his starts, except for the June 5 game that was suspended after two innings. Michael Tonkin pitched the eighth inning for Rochester, striking out one in a perfect relief inning.
A.J. Achter worked the ninth inning for the Wings, and the IronPigs quickly mounted a threat against the Wings' All-Star closer. A bloop single, followed by a single and fielding error put runners at second and third with none out. Chris McGuiness drilled a game-tying double into the right field corner off Achter, who was 13-for-13 in save opportunities since taking over as closer. A fly out, followed by a check-swing infield hit, had runners at the corners with only one out. Edgar Duran's safety squeeze brought McGuiness in for a 7-6 IronPigs lead. d'Arnaud's fourth hit of the game - a bloop shot into right-center - brought in an insurance run and made it 8-6.
With relief ace Adam Loewen pitching for the IronPigs in the bottom of the ninth, the Wings made a rally attempt. Diaz reached on an infield hit and advanced to second base on a throwing error to start the frame. Rodriguez followed by drilling a single up the middle, bring Diaz around to score and pulling the Wings to within a run at 8-7. Martinez battled Loewen (1-3) to a full count before hitting a single, his third hit of the night. That put the tying and winning runs on base for Arcia with none out. Arcia fell into an 0-2 hole after two mighty swings; but his third swing left no doubt, launching a line drive home run into the Wings bullpen for a game-winning, three-run homer. It extended his hitting streak to eight game in style, and was the fourth homer in the streak.
The Wings out-hit Lehigh Valley 14-11. Polanco and Martinez each had three hits, and Rodriguez had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Achter picked up the save deispite the blown save, improving his record to 4-2.
