Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Trenton, New Jersey- Saturday night's battle between the Portland Sea Dogs and Trenton Thunder came down to the final batter. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning of a 3-3 game, Trenton's Bradley Suttle delivered a single, leading his squad to a 4-3 victory at Waterfront Park.
After watching Trenton open the scoring with a run in the second, the Sea Dogs quickly responded, taking the lead with two runs in their half of the third. Chih-Hsien Chiang started the frame with a single, before Jeremy Hazelbaker picked up his first hit in a Portland uniform, knocking in Chiang with a double down the right field line. Two batters later, Hazelbaker found his way to home plate, scoring on a sacrafice fly to center field by Ryan Lavarnway.
The Thunder pulled even in the bottom of the third inning, as Austin Romine homered to right field on the first pitch he saw in the at-bat from Brock Huntzinger. The Portland starter finished with a no-decision, allowing two runs on eight hits in four innings of work. Trenton starter Craig Heyer also received a no-decision, allowing two runs on seven hits in four innings.
The game stayed tied until the bottom of the sixth inning, when Trenton took the lead on a solo home run. With two outs in the frame, Jose Gil deposited a 2-0 offering from Eammon Portice over the center field wall.
The Thunder maintained their lead until the top of the ninth inning, when the Sea Dogs knotted the score. After Jonathan Hee grounded out to short, Chih-Hsien Chiang smacked a 2-0 pitch from Fernando Hernandez that just eluded Raymond Kruml's glove for a solo home run to right field.
Unfortunately for Portland, the tie didn't last long. After loading the bases with three walks, Trenton received an RBI single from Bradley Suttle to right field, as the home team walked off with a 4-3 victory.
Despite allowing a run in the ninth, Fernando Hernandez (4-2) picked up the win for the Thunder, defeating Seth Garrison (0-2), who allowed one run in two-plus innings for Portland.
The Sea Dogs and Thunder will conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05. Stolmy Pimentel (0-5, 6.19) will take the ball for Portland, while Manny Banuelos (1-0, 2.25) will make the start for Trenton.
On Monday, Portland will return to Hadlock Field for its longest homestand of the year, when they will play nine games in eight days. May 24th will be Bark in the Park night. Mike Piazza's Dog Tricks will be on hand as well that night, performing for the crowd between innings. For tickets, log on to www.seadogs.com or call 207-879-9500.
