Erie SeaWolves News Release
It took 12 innings, but the SeaWolves took down the Bowie Baysox, 3-2, snapping a two-game skid and improving their record to 18-21 on the season.
Bowie jumped ahead in the first inning for the second straight day. With one out, Erie starter Jacob Turner surrendered back-to-back hits to Greg Miclat and Robbie Widlansky putting runners on the corners for Steve Lerud. Lerud doubled down the left field line, scoring Miclat for a 1-0 Baysox lead.
The Baysox would take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth against Turner. Widlansky doubled with one out and came home to score on a two-out single to the right field gap by Caleb Joseph.
Brian Matusz, on rehab assignment from the Baltimore Orioles, held the SeaWolves scoreless over the first six innings in the game and left with a two-run lead.
In the top of the seventh, Erie finally cashed in against the Bowie bullpen. Bryan Holaday led off with a double and came home to score the âWolves first run on an Audy Ciriaco base hit to right. Justin Henry then singled putting runners on the corners with one out. After an Adam Calderone strikeout, the lineup turned over to the top with Jamie Johnson. Johnson slapped a single to left, scoring Ciriaco making it a 2-2 game.
The game remained tied until the top of the 12. With one out, Johnson doubled to the wall in right center. Brandon Douglas singled and Rawley Bishop walked, loading the bases for Bryan Pounds. With Pounds at the plate, reliever Raul Rivero delivered a wild pitch, allowing Johnson to score the go-ahead run from third giving the âWolves their first lead of the game.
Chance Ruffin (2-3) struck out the side in the bottom of the 12th, preserving the Erie win. Ruffin worked 2.2 innings of scoreless relief picking up his second win of the season.
Turner did not factor in the decision despite another solid performance. The Erie righty, on his 20th birthday, allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and eight strikeouts (one shy of a season high) in a season-high eight innings pitched.
Erie is now 3-2 in extra innings games.
The âWolves go for the series win on Sunday afternoon at Prince George's Stadium...2:05 First Pitch. Mark Sorensen (2-2, 4.07 ERA) takes the mound for the SeaWolves as they go for their first road series win of the season.
