TONIGHT: The Richmond Flying Squirrels and Reading Phillies will meet in game two of a three-game series...The Flying Squirrels struck for three runs in the top of the sixth inning and held on for a 4-3 over the R-Phils, turning a one-out double play with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to preserve the win on Friday night in front of 7,910 fans at FirstEnergy Stadium.
TONIGHT'S STARTERS: Right-hander Daryl Maday gets the start in game two of the series for the Flying Squirrels...Received a no-decision in his last outing 5/15 against Harrisburg...Allowed four runs on eight hits in four innings...Struck out five batters and walked two...Eight hits allowed were a season high...Four of the eight hits went for extra bases (all doubles)...Had allowed just 11 hits over his previous three starts (16.1 IP)...Outing was his shortest of the season...Retired the leadoff batter in three of his four innings...Recorded four groundouts and two flyouts...Threw 79 pitches, 47 strikes...Threw 20-plus pitches in two of his four innings on the mound (1st-26, 4th-23)...Threw first-pitch strikes to 13 of the 22 batters he faced...Club scored 11 runs in the contest after scoring 11 runs total in his first five starts (2.2 R/G)...Activated from the Disabled List 5/9...Was placed on the DL 5/2 due to pneumonia...Is 2-2 with a 4.39 ERA in eight career appearances, including six starts, against Reading...Spent the majority of the 2010 season with Richmond...Won his first seven decisions including six straight 4/15/10-5/12/10...Named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week 4/26/10-5/2/10...Named an EL Mid-Season All-Star...Did not pitch in the game due to promotion...Promoted to Triple-A Fresno 7/3/10...Went 8-5 with a 2.34 ERA in 16 starts prior to promotion...Went 1-4 with a 9.21 ERA in seven games including five starts with Fresno...Sent back down to Richmond 8/4/10...Went 1-3 with a 9.68 ERA in nine games, two starts, after being sent down...Selected in the 30th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft...Attended the University of Arkansas.
Right-hander Josh Zeid gets the nod in game two of the series for the Phillies...Enters the 2011 season rated as the #23 prospect in the Philadelphia Phillies farm system according to Baseball America...Suffered the loss in his last outing 5/14 against New Hampshire...Allowed a career-high eight runs on six hits in four innings of work...Struck out five batters and walked three...Has gone four innings or less in four his last five starts (4/22 due to weather), striking out 12 batters and walking 10 over that span (17 IP)...Tossed five hitless and picked up his lone win 4/29 against Portland...Spent the entire 2010 season with Low-A Lakewood and went 8-4 with a 2.93 ERA in 43 games, including 12 starts...Struck out 111 batters and walked 27 in 107 1/3 innings...Went 2-2 with a 2.83 ERA in his 12 starts, striking out 62 batters in 60 1/3 innings...Named a South Atlantic League Mid-Season All-Star...Tossed eight scoreless innings over appearances during the SAL playoffs including working four perfect frames while striking out six in the Blue Claws title-clinching Game 4 win over Greenville...Went 8-5 with a 2.94 ERA in 15 starts with Short Season-A Williamsport in 2009...Struck out 72 batters and walked 20 in 79 2/3 innings and limited opponents to a .217 batting average against...Selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 10th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft...Attended Tulane University after transferring from Vanderbilt University.
ONE MORE: The Flying Squirrels improved to 4-8 on the season in one-run games with last night's 4-3 win over the R-Phils...The club had dropped six of its last seven games decided by a lone run including each of its previous three contests...Twenty-seven of Richmond's first 40 games this season have been decided by three runs or less and the team is 11-16 in those contests.
ROGER THAT!: Outfielder Roger Kieschnick went 2-for-4 Friday night with a triple, home run, a season-high three RBIs, and a run scored...It was the first homer for the 24-year-old since 6/28/10 against Akron when he and Thomas Neal hit back-to-back home runs off of the Aeros' Paulo Espino in the bottom of the first inning (42 G/162 AB)...Since seeing his average dip to a season-low .173 on 5/7, Kieschnick is hitting .326 (15-for-46) and has hits in eight of his last 10 contests including multi-hit performances in seven of those games...Five of his 15 hits have gone for extra bases including three doubles, a triple, and a home run and he has driven in six runs.
THE GEORGIA PEACH: Second baseman Charlie Culberson has hits in each of his last five games, his third hit streak of the season of five games or more...The 22-year-old is batting .375 (9-for-24) with two doubles and four runs scored over his last five contests...Culberson leads the club in batting average (.296) and slugging percentage (.385)...He has appeared in all 40 games for the Flying Squirrels and leads the Eastern League in at-bats (169) while ranking fourth in hits (50), one off the league lead.
MAY IS FOR MATOS: Right-hander Osiris Matos retired the only batter he faced Friday night to record his third hold of the season...In seven appearances this month, the 26-year-old has tossed 13 scoreless innings, limiting opponents to a .140 (6-for-43) batting average against...He has struck out seven batters while walking two over that span and has lowered his ERA from 5.02 to 2.63...Matos has thrown first-pitch strikes to each of the last 10 batters that he has faced.
RAY OF SUNSHINE: Right-hander Ronnie Ray has worked 15 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings spanning his last seven appearances, including working a season-long four innings on Thursday night against Bowie...He was struck out 20 batters and has walked three over that stretch...Opponents are hitting .102 (5-for-49) against him over his last seven outings...Ray has lowered his ERA from 1.93 to 0.99 and opponent batting average against from .304 to .200...Since the All-Star break last season (7/15/10), Ray is 4-1 and has allowed 12 runs, seven earned, (1.17 ERA) in 54 innings spanning his last 35 outings...He has struck out 61 batters over that stretch and has walked 12 while holding opponents to a .184 batting average against (35-for-190).
PITCHING IN: The Flying Squirrels pitching staff leads the Eastern League with a 2.84 ERA through 40 games, the only staff with a sub-three ERA..The club ranks second in the league with 338 strikeouts, and the pitching staff has logged a league-high 376 2/3 innings of work.
HOME AND AWAY: The Flying Squirrels are in the middle of a stretch where they will play 10 of 13 games at home...Richmond is 14-9 at home and is batting .253 (205-for-811) in 23 games at The Diamond while averaging 4.17 runs per game at home (96R/23G)...Beginning May 27th, the club will start a stretch where it will play 13 of 16 games on the road...The Flying Squirrels are 5-12 on the road, and they are batting .196 (113-for-576) and averaging 3.06 runs per game (52R/17G) in 17 road contests.
