Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
READING, PA - The Reading Phillies (24-17) slipped past the Richmond Flying Squirrels (19-22), 4-3, on Saturday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.
The Squirrels got out quickly against the R-Phils in the top of the first inning when Reading starter Josh Zeid hit lead-off batter Justin Christian with a pitch. Ryan Lormand followed and sent a hot-shot to third base that Carlos Rivero couldn't handle. The error put runners at the corners with nobody out. Nick Noonan then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Christian for a 1-0 lead. Lormand also tagged on the play, and advanced to second base. He scored a batter later when Jose Flores singled through the left-side of the infield.
Reading immediately got even in the bottom of the inning, mounting a two-out rally against Squirrels' starter Daryl Maday. Matt Rizzotti ignited the rally with a single, which Cody Overbeck followed with a double off the wall in left field. Rivero then tied the game, 2-2, with a double down the left-field line.
The R-Phils pulled in front in the third inning, when Freddy Galvis tripled through the alley in right-center field to lead off the inning. Matt Miller bounced out to Noonan at short to plate Galvis for a 3-2 advantage.
Richmond leveled the ledger with another unearned run against Zeid in the top of the fifth inning. Juan Perez reached base on a two-out error on second baseman Fidel Hernandez and advanced to second base on a wild-pitch. Roger Kieschnick drilled his second single of the night to center field to score him, knotting the score, 3-3.
Following Galvis' triple in the third inning, Maday retired the next eight batters that he faced. However, Galvis snapped that string with a solo-home run into the swimming pool over the right-field wall. Galvis' fourth home run of the season put Reading back in front, 4-3.
Each starter worked six innings in the ballgame. Zeid (2-3) allowed three unearned runs on five hits, walked three and struck out three as he won for the second time. Maday (1-3) allowed four runs, all earned, on six hits. He walked one and struck out one as he fell for the third time on the year.
On a Major League rehab assignment, right-hander Jose Contreras allowed the Squirrels to load the bases with nobody out in the seventh inning. However, he battled back to keep the Squirrels from tying the game, ultimately working a scoreless inning. Richmond stranded 10 men on base in the loss.
Right-hander Justin De Fratus handled the final two innings, retiring all six batters that he faced to earn his fourth save of the season.
The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 1:05 PM on Sunday afternoon at FirstEnergy Stadium. LHP Clayton Tanner (0-4, 3.79) will make the start for the Squirrels against RHP J.C. Ramirez (5-2, 2.93) for the R-Phils.
