Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ) - The Trenton Thunder (23-18) walked-off to a 4-3 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (12-26) Saturday night in front of 7,394 fans at Waterfront Park. Bradley Suttle lined a single to right field with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give the Thunder their 17th win in 23 home games in 2011.
After Melky Mesa scored on a double play in the bottom of the second to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead, Portland roared back with two runs of their own in the top of the third. Trailing 2-1 with one out in the bottom of third, Thunder designated hitter Austin Romine made sure the game was tied before his atbat was over. Romine lined a pitch from Portland starter Brock Huntzinger over the Hyundai scoreboard in right field, tying the score at 2-2.
The game stayed tied until two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jose Gil came to the plate. Gil smashed an Eammon Portice offering over the wall in straightaway center field to give Trenton the 3-2 lead. The solo homerun was Gil's second in a Thunder uniform in just nine games.
The game was extended in the top of the ninth after Fernando Hernandez allowed Portland to tie the score at 3-3 on a Chih-Hsien Chiang solo homerun. In the bottom of the ninth, the Thunder drew three walks to load the bases with two outs for Bradley Suttle. The Thunder third baseman then lined a single over the head of Chiang in right field to score Addison Maruszak from third and deliver Trenton the 4-3 win.
Attempting the sweep, the Thunder will wrap their three-game series and homestand with the Portland Sea Dogs Sunday at 1:05 PM from Waterfront Park. The Yankees top left-handed pitching prospect Manny Banuelos (1-0, 2.25) will get the day game start for the Thunder. Banuelos will face Portland's Stolmy Pimentel (0-5, 6.19).
