Senators Capitalize on Misplays

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets matched a season-high with four errors and watched their losing streak hit five games as they fell to the Harrisburg Senators by a 7-2 score today at NYSEG Stadium.

The first inning proved ominous as Jordany Valdespin's throwing error allowed Josh Johnson to reach base safely. The Senators' shortstop was almost retired for the second time when he was picked off first by B-Mets starter Robert Carson. With only one means of escape, Johnson broke for second and slid in safely as second baseman Josh Satin muffed the throw from Allan Dykstra at first.

Archie Gilbert made Binghamton pay for the errors by lining a single to centerfield to bring Johnson home with the game's first run.

In the second, catcher Devin Ivany stroked the first of two leadoff home runs in the game off Carson. Josh Johnson would follow suit with his first homer of the season in the fifth.

Poor defensive work led to another unearned run in the fourth as Gilbert reached on Eric Campbell's eight error of the season. Gilbert moved to third on a double play and came home on Jonathan Tucker's single.

Following Johnson's leadoff shot in the fifth, Harrisburg scratched out one final run off Carson as Ivany came through with a single to centerfield to plate Gilbert, giving Harrisburg a 5-1 lead.

Ivany would be Carson's final batter as Roy Merritt entered in relief, allowed two base runners, but bounced back to strike out Brad Peacock to leave the bases loaded. Merritt logged two innings, allowing five hits and two runs along the way.

Senators starter Brad Peacock, entering the fifth-best ERA in the league, lived up to the hype. The right-hander struck out ten and allowed just one run in six innings. His lone blemish came in the second inning when he allowed a solo home run to Allan Dykstra.

The B-Mets scratched out a run on a bases-loaded fielder's choice from Lorenzo Scott in the eighth, but were shut down in the ninth by Matt Chico as Carlos Guzman bounced into a game-ending double play.

Peacock's effort vaults him to the league lead in several categories with six wins, 66 strike outs, and a 0.83 WHIP.

The B-Mets (13-25) look to get back to the winning side as they wrap up their rain-shortened series against the Senators (18-19) tomorrow with first pitch set for 1:05pm. RHP Jeurys Familia (0-0, 0.64) will face off against RHP Tanner Roark (0-1, 13.50). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
