Reading Fightin Phils News Release

Reading, PA -- Freddy Galvis is known for his amazing defensive skills at shortstop. On Saturday, Galvis amazed the fans with his bat.

Galvis helped put the R-Phils ahead in both the third and fifth innings, Josh Zeid tossed six solid innings, Jose Contreras moved a step forward in his second rehab appearance of the season, and the Reading Phillies beat Daryl Maday (1-3, 4.14) and the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3 in front of 9, 130 fans at FirstEnergy Stadium on Saturday evening.

Galvis, 21, finished Saturday's contest 2-4 at the plate with his fourth home run of the season - a shot that proved to be the game-winner. The Venezuelan shortstop led-off the bottom of the third inning with his team-high third triple of the season, and came around to score the go-ahead run on a Matt Miller RBI groundout. Two innings later, Galvis broke a 3-3 tie game with a solo home run in the fifth inning -- his fourth of the season, and helped give the R-Phils their first home win since May 15. Galvis now has four hits, two triples, and three RBIs over his last three games, and is now one home run away from tying his career high in a season (five), which was set last year.

Reading (24-17) ripped just six hits on the night, but used a solid pitching performance from Zeid (2-3, 5.19) to get by Richmond for the first time this season. A native of New Haven, CT, Zeid allowed two unearned runs in the first inning, and an unearned run in the fifth, but was sharp. In all, the 24-year-old right-hander allowed five hits, three walks, and three unearned runs over six innings of work.

Things got exciting in Baseballtown during the seventh inning when Jose Contreras entered the game. Contreras, 39, was received from Philadelphia earlier in the day on a Major League rehab assignment, and entered the game with a one-run lead. The Cuban native, who was placed on the disabled list with a right elbow strain back in April, allowed two hits and one walk over one scoreless inning. And, while he loaded the bases with no outs, the veteran pitched out of it. After all was said and done, Contreras tossed 21 pitches - 12 for strikes and nine for balls.

Reading reliever Justin De Fratus tossed the final two innings of the game to earn his team-high fourth save of the season. De Fratus, a member of the Phillies 40-man roster, fanned three over the two hitless innings.

On Sunday, in the finale, RHP J.C. Ramirez (5-2, 2.92) will take the ball for Reading. A native of Nicaragua, Ramirez, 22, was solid in his last outing - tossing eight good innings to get the win. It was his first win in the month of May, after posting four wins in April.

LHP Clayton Tanner (0-3, 3.94) gets the nod for Richmond in game three. Tanner, 23, is still looking for is first win of 2011. Last season, Tanner posted a 9-9 mark with a 3.68 ERA for Richmond in 27 starts.

Coverage begins at 12:35 p.m. with the R-Phils pre-game show on ESPN 1240 AM WIOV and www.readingphillies.com. Brian Seltzer will have the call for all of the action, with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m.
