South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays got goals from Cail MacLean, Nate Kiser, Travis Morin and Pierre-Luc O'Brien to defeat the Gwinnett Gladiators 4-3 at the North Charleston Coliseum for their 9th straight win at home.
"I didn't really want to get into a special teams battle with Gwinnett," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "But we played very well on the power play and capitalized on chances."
In the first period it was the Gladiators that struck first with Lou Dickenson getting his 15th goal of the season. But the Stingrays came back to tie it up when Cail MacLean scored a five on three goal, his 11th of the year, from Travis Morin and Marty Gurein.
The second period featured a battle of the power plays as both teams got two power play goals. Matt Anderson gave Gwinnett the lead with his 6th goal of the season, but the Rays tied it up with a power play goal by Nate Kiser, his third of the season. Kiser's goal came at 7:33 and was assisted by Morin and Chris Chaput. Gwinnett would retake the lead on a power play goal by Andy Brandt, his 8th of the season, but they would tie it up once again when Morin got his team leading 18th goal of the season. The goal came at 13:22 from Mike Gabinet and Marty Guerin. Morin has now scored in five straight games.
In the third period Pierre-Luc O'Brien got the only goal, which turned out to be the game winner. The goal came at 11:35 of the third period Derrick Byfuglien and Matt Scherer.
The winning goaltender was Josh Johnson who stopped 20 of 23 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Craig Kowalski who stopped 25 of 29 shots he faced. The Stingrays went three for nine on the power play while killing off four of the six short handed situations they faced.
