Reading Royals News Release

Trenton, NJ - The Reading Royals (21-15-3=45, 3rd North Division) of the ECHL bagged a couple of power play goals (2-4), and the penalty killers blanked the Trenton Devils (4-4), as the Royals defeated the Devils, 3-1 at Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, New Jersey. The Royals got the game's first goal from the newest addition to the team, Steven Later, and, after Trenton tied the game early in the third, bounced back with another power play goal to take a lead the team would not relinquish. Jon Quick (13-9-2; 36/37) had a special night of his own in net for the Royals, making several spectacular stops-particularly in the first period; while Dave Caruso (10-11-2; 25/27; 1 eng) suffered the loss for the Devils.

Reading struck 14:36 into the game on the team's first power play chance of the night, when Steven Later, playing in his first game for Reading, picked up at the right point and carried hard to the front of the Devils' goal. Later's first shot was stopped by Caruso, but he was able to back-hand the fluttering puck out of mid-air into the goal for his first goal as a Royal (and seventh of the season). After a scoreless second period, Trenton tied the game at one 1:07 into the third, when Zach Tarkir fired a wrist shot from the right point that Matt Radoslovich deflected behind Quick for his first goal of the year. The Royals bounced back 2:02 later, on their second power play chance of the night, when Mike Salekin took a shot from the point that was stopped by Caruso. However, a mad scramble ensued in front of the Trenton net with Dany Roussin keeping the puck alive. Brock Hooton then swept in to punch the loose puck from the top of the crease into the goal for his fourteenth-and what proved to be his team leading fourth game winner-of the season. The Royals played smart, simple hockey from that point forward, and Hooton added an empty netter with 40 seconds left, as Reading won for the second time in five tries in Trenton this season.

The Royals are back in action tomorrow night (Saturday, January 19, 7:05 pm) when the Johnstown Chiefs visit the Sovereign Center. The first 1500 fans twenty-one years of age and older will receive an ‘R-Team/R-Town' pub glass courtesy of Labatt Blue and All-Star Distributing. The game night broadcast on Saturday will begin at 6:35 pm with the pre-game warm-up show on ESPN Radio 1240 am in Ephrata, as well as on the internet through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com. Streaming video is available on a pay per view basis through the B2 Networks.
