Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Johnstown, PA - The Johnstown Chiefs picked up their third win in as many games in front of 2,502 fans on Friday night with a 5-1 win over the Dayton Bombers.
The Chiefs struck early, and often, with Jean Desrochers getting the home team on the board just 59 seconds into the game. The goal was his fifteenth of the year with assists going to Mike Sgroi and Tyler Hirsch. It was the second game in a row that line combined for the Chiefs' first goal.
Grant Goeckner-Zoeller scored just 39 seconds later tying the game for Dayton. It was the only shot Ryan Nie would let in, as the shot bounced off his stick, over his head, and into the net.
Mike Knight got the lead back for Johnstown at 6:40 of the first with a wrister that beat Jeremy Duchesne to the blocker side. Knight's goal started a string of four unanswered tallies for Johnstown.
Desrochers followed with his second of the game at 9:03 of the first, but was unable to complete the hat trick. Brian Deeth's goal on a point shot in the second period stretched the lead to three goals, and Tyler Hirsch added an insurance marker at 19:36 of the third. Hirsch finished a play started by Rob Drummond who raced by Dayton's players who had stopped skating on a delayed offside call.
Desrochers (2G), Hirsch (1G, 1A), Nicolas Bachand (2A), and Ryan Garlock (2A) each had multiple-point nights for the Chiefs. Ryan Nie made 22 saves in earning his twelfth win of the year, and the Johnstown power play went 1-for-9.
The Chiefs' next home game is on January 26 against Dayton for the Toyota paper airplane toss night. If you can throw a paper plane through the sunroof of a Toyota parked at center ice, you win the car! If you miss that one, you can catch the Chiefs when they host Reading on January 27 for the first-ever Chiefs' "Pink in the Rink" night. Join the fight against breast cancer as $1 from each ticket sold will go to breast cancer research. There will also be a live auction for the Chiefs' pink game-worn jerseys. Great seats are still available at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink, call 536-5156 or go to www.johnstownchiefs.com to get yours today!!
