Inferno lose to Texas in SO 2-1
January 18, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Columbia Inferno News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. (Jan. 18, 2008)-The Columbia Inferno (15-15-4-5, 39 points) rode a strong performance from goaltender Jeff Jakaitis and a shorthanded goal from Jeremy Hall to take a point from the league-leading Texas Wildcatters (28-4-2-4, 62 points) in a 2-1 shootout loss on Saturday night. The Inferno launched 13 shots at Texas goaltender Anton Khudobin, but the Minnesota Wild prospect was equal to the task, stopping every shot he faced. Not to be outdone, Jakaitis turned aside the nine he saw, and the two teams gutted out a 0-0 first period. Texas took a 1-0 lead just a minute into the first period when forward John McNabb picked up a Ross Carlson rebound and beat a sprawling Jakaitis low blocker side for his 19th goal of the year. Jeremy Hall tied the game 1-1 with just a minute left in the second period when, while shorthanded, he found a sliver of daylight on Khudobin's blocker side with a sharp shot from the low slot. Jakaitis stood tall in the third period, stoning all 11 shots he faced to help force overtime and the subsequent shootout. Both Jakaitis and Khudobin stopped the first five shooters they faced, requiring an extra three rounds of sudden death. Khudobin stayed perfect, while defenseman Cleve Kinley was able to slip a puck past Jakaitis in round eight to give the Wildcatters a 2-1 shootout victory. Jakaitis stopped 33 total shots, while Khudobin turned aside 20 of 21. The Inferno return to take on the Wildcatters on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7:05 p.m. at the Carolina Coliseum.
